Humans vs. Vampires in the dark? Uh oh!
Review of 30 Days Of Night DVD by pmcds

Advantages: Very well made film
Disadvantages: A little long for what it is

...far as comic adaptations go, 30 Days Of Night is probably one of the more subtle to hit our screens. The comic is more of a cult publication, and the film came onto the screen without a big bang. However, I can't speak for the comic, having never read it, but the film is very well made and kept me entertained for the 2 hours running time it offers. The Plot The town of Barrow in Alaska in the northernmost in the States. Each year, it experiences ...
...30 days of night. As the town prepares for the month-long darkness, the day before, a mysterious stranger appears in town, threatening the inhabitants. Sheriff Eben Oleson places the stranger in jail, where he continues to warn of something that will come and take him. This something, as it turns out, is a gang of bloodthirsty vampires. Given 30 days of complete darkness to roam around in is a dream for vampires, who as legend has it cannot suffer ... Read review

113 Minutes Of Fright
Review of 30 Days Of Night DVD by RazzaLazza

Advantages: It's a horror film that's genuinely scary.
Disadvantages: Portrayal of time passing is not excellent.

...winter rather than the alleged 30. As well as this, 4000 people live in the real town compared with the 563 of the film. I like my films to be factual, and whilst these inaccuracies did annoy me a little when I found out about them - you can understand why they did choose to twist the facts a little in order to make for a more interesting and enjoyable film. It is only loosely based on the Alaskan town of Barrow so it's worth bearing this in mind ...
...first film of David Slade's that I have seen. It is worth noting however that he is also the director of the film 'Hard Candy', a film that I have never seen but have always wanted to watch. '30 Days Of Night' has encouraged me to go out and buy 'Hard Candy' on DVD, but at current it remains sitting on the shelf still wrapped in its cellophane. Slade is an excellent director and proves so with '30 Days Of Night' I feel. He captures a great energy ... Read review

I hear you have a monster here!
Review of Beowulf DVD by MAFARRIMOND

Advantages: Visually spectacular. Technologically innovative. Instils new life into an ancient poem.
Disadvantages: Emotionally lacking.

The 2007 film, Beowulf is based on the epic Anglo-Saxon poem from 700 AD which spins a tale of myth and legend; of monsters and heroes. Director Robert Zemeckis makes no attempt to portray this tale as a real life. He retells the myth passing on all the magic of the poem. The monsters and heroes are larger than life wonderfully transformed cinematically into something more tangible than can be achieved through reading the poem. The film, set in ...
...Up steps the brave warrior Beowulf (Ray Winstone). Grendel though is nothing compared to his mother (Angelina Jolie)!! His real problems now begin . . . The poem has been adapted for cinema by co-writers Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary. The pair have a successful history of writing screenplays together having scripted and won awards for Pulp Fiction. This version is not the first film to try and recreate the epic poem - there are two other versions I ... Read review

30 days of boredom
Review of 30 Days Of Night DVD by bonsi6337

Advantages: Special Effects were good
Disadvantages: weak plot, too like other movies

Here is one film that I really wanted to see. Billed as terrifying and bloody, it seemed to be my kind of film. Lots of blood and gore and generally a really scary film. I was so looking forward to watching it! Not that I am a fan of Josh Hartnett or Melissa George - I'm not. It's just that all the hype surrounding this film really gave the message that it was the best horror of 2007. I was sadly mistaken in believing it. ***Synopsis*** In Alaska, ...
...a month (hence the title!). Josh Hartnett is the sherriff of a sleepy little town where not a lot happens on a daily basis. In fact it is one of those little towns where everyone knows everyone and there are very few secrets. Strangers are noticed straight away and the locals are generally suspicious of newcomers. Melissa George plays Harnett's ex-wife in the film. She is in town but does not live there any more. Well it is a slow start to the film ... Read review
