A must for all trekkie fans
Review of Star Trek : 1-9 (Movie Box Set) (Wide Screen) by
lindcarla
Advantages: Box of chocolates, bottle of wine and settle back for a Trekkie-fest
Disadvantages: Should not be in the horror category, this is pure sci-fi
...in the horror category.
Star Trek is a classic for all sci-fi fans and you should just get settled into your seat and immerse yourself. The episodes are really good although if you dont have a wide screen t.v. you can miss bits.
All the usual characters and everything you would expect from Star Trek. If you haven't seen it on t.v. then you should have! But really, for anyone new to sci-fi these films will get you hooked. They are exciting, funny, ... ...the "monsters" will make you laugh (or groan) and sometimes the acting is a bit lame but it is all part of the fun. You always know who is going to get killed because it is usually an "Ensign" that is not particularly important to the plot and the core crew have to keep boldly going where no-one has been before. ...

The Hammer Collection Box Set
Review of The Hammer Collection (Box Set) by
spacavoy
Advantages: An aesthetically pleasing collection
Disadvantages: Some rather poor inclusions
...of classic Hammer films from the very good to...not so good. An aesthetically pleasing set for fans of the studio, or those wanting at least half of the titles. Features star favourites Peter Cushing, Raquel Welch, Ursula Andress and Christopher Lee (about whom there is an interesting documentary with 'Scars of Dracula').
The extra features vary greatly, the biggest ommission, in my opinion, is the total absence of subtitles for the hearing impaired.
... ...some for the first time, and completely uncut.
My personal favourite was the inclusion of the 1965 film 'The Nanny' which stars a very chilling Bette Davis in a well scripted, and often overlooked role.
Probably a tad overpriced for most, but new DVD versions of individual films are also available, so take a look at some of those if you don't want to commit yourself to a full collection. ...

Against all odds...amazing
Review of Ginger Snaps Back DVD by
skiesaregrey
Advantages: Inventive, scary, fantastic performances, quality directing.
Disadvantages: not very widely appealing
...Cronenberg and other Canadian minds. Ginger Snaps proves John Fawcett's ability in the field, as each of the 3 films is not only scary, but interesting, well scripted and works incredibly on the low budget and B-Movie set-up.
Ginger Snaps Back was an attempt to keep the series from going stale. The first sequel, GS: Unleashed, was very successful in dropping the gothic style of the original and working with a whole new atmosphere within the same ... ...setting and comic book set-up, Ginger Snaps Back decided to work more on the mythical aspects of the werewolf legend. The revolutionary approach in the modern setting of the 'curse' being a metaphor for menstruation and puberty, and also that it was transfered as an STD, meant that GS1 was quite groundbreaking in terms of the werewolf genre. This movie actually takes back this approach and works with legend, as the two characters seem to be fated ...

Camp Nightmares
Review of Halloween Camp DVD by
3rdRockSatan
Advantages: So bad it's good
Disadvantages: It's still bad, though
...of the way first. Halloween Camp is actually a sequel to the film Bloody Murder, released in 2000 and so uncannily like Friday the 13th that the makers could easily sue. Across the border the film is known as Bloody Murder 2: Closing Camp but seeing as the UK didn’t get the original they decided on the name change and also wittingly create the tagline ‘Trevor VS Jason’, the talent of those marketing executives know no limits sometimes. To those that ... ...commissioned and here we have Halloween Camp. The film takes place five years later and the camp that saw the deaths of many has opened up again and enjoyed a successful year. The camp counsellors and owner are the only ones left on the site ready to shut it up for the summer. Among those is Tracy (Katy Woodruff) whose brother was at the camp five years ago but his body never found. The legend of Trevor still lives on though most people think it’s ...

"What I want for Christmas is please go away"
Review of The Stone Tape DVD by
greenierexyboy
Advantages: A highpoint of the screen ghost story
Disadvantages: May seem dated to some
...a suspense-cum-horror tale shown by the BBC at Christmas in 1972. It is often cited as being the pinnacle of "Quatermass" author Nigel Kneale's output (tackling as it does one of his favourite themes; science meeting the paranormal or fantastic), and similarly regarded as possibly the very best ghost story ever made for television.
Plot (spoilers included throughout this, and the rest of the review)
... ...their work, and learn from the site foreman (Iain Cuthbertson) that there is a room within the building that the workmen refuse to enter because it is haunted. The team's curiosity gets the better of them, and their probings reveal a set of stone steps seemingly leading nowhere.
A particularly sensitive member of the team, a computer programmer named Jill (Jane Asher) finds herself alone in the room, and feels a sudden drop in temperature; fleeing, ...
