A nice insight into 19th century Vienna
Review of The Illusionist DVD by
micksheff
Advantages: Interesting story, captures the era in which it is set
Disadvantages: Slow paced, drawn out in places
I was tricked into watching The Illusionist, if you pardon the pun. A friend had recently acquired it on DVD and I had been subjected to his enthusiastic raves regarding how good this film was. As someone who is not particularly up to speed on films I hadn't actually heard anything about this film before, but I agreed to borrow it and last night I finally got the chance to sit down and watch it.
The film is set in Vienna during the 19th century ... ...the name of Eisenheim. During the opening scene of the film we see Eisenheim on a theatre stage, in an almost trance like state. Suddenly there is chaos and dozens of policemen storm the stage, uttering the words; "Eisenheim, we are arresting you for outraging public decency". This opening scene is actually a snippet from the latter part of the film as from here the story flashes back to Eisenhower's childhood. These opening shots were however enough ...

Toby Jones is...Truman Capote
Review of Infamous DVD by
shister_not
Advantages: Great acting, direction, story
Disadvantages: We've heard it before
...a completely different approach.
Infamous is nowhere near as dark a film as Capote. Instead of opening with a scene depict the murders of the Clutters, Infamous opens with a dinner party reflecting Truman's socialite status. This is an aspect of Truman that the film draws heavily on often as a comedic device. Infamous depicts the life of Truman Capote as he investigates the events of the murder of a family in Holcomb, Kansas; the research that would ... ...film are in the opinion of this reviewer, too dramatised and exaggerated to be consider believable. This is of course a huge area to fail in when attempting to tell a true story. Other than this, Infamous is largely notable and I would recommend it even to the Capote fans. ...

Better Left Undiscovered?
Review of Undiscovered DVD by
salem_witch
Advantages: The music
Disadvantages: The plot isn't the best
When I was looking through the films on Sky and saw a film featuring Ashlee Simpson I knew I had to record it. I never knew she acted in anything and was intrigued to see if she and the film were any good. As someone who has reasonably recently discovered her music I wanted to see if any of her songs I knew featured in the film. A quick look on IMDb.com told me that unsurprisingly 'Undiscovered' a song from 'Autobiography' was in it and a couple ... ...before. I also learnt that the film had a lot of negative reviews and Simpson was even nominated for a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress. Even after knowing this I still wanted to watch it out of curiosity more than anything.
Brier (Pell James) is a model who moves from New York to L.A. to try out acting. Her boyfriend Mick is a rock star and has repeatedly cheated on her and she knows this. After moving to L.A. she meets Clea (Ashlee Simpson) ...

Death as the Route to Life
Review of Ghost Dog - The Way Of The Samurai DVD by
Volta120
Advantages: Offbeat, humorous and thought-provoking
Disadvantages: A little too offbeat for some
...The Basic Plot
Ghost Dog (Forest Whitaker) is an assassin living in Jersey City (although, we're never told that) who holds true to Bushido, the ancient Japanese chivalric code of the Samurai, and is guided in particular by the tenets of Hagakure, a series of commentaries and guidelines that were outlined in the early 18th century. The Samurai is a servant or retainer who pledges his life and sword to a master, and in Ghost Dog's case his ... ...several years before (or so Ghost Dog thinks) and by so doing unwittingly earned the future assassin's loyalty. Between jobs Ghost Dog lives in a shack on the roof of a building with only some carrier pigeons and some books to keep him company. His only human friends are a Haitian ice-cream vendor and chatterbox, Raymond (Isaach de Bankolé), who can only speak French, and a precocious-but-sweet little girl, Pearline (Camille Winbush), with whom Ghost ...
