We live in an island age ...
Review of About A Boy (Wide Screen) by
miasmum82
Advantages: Fantastic storyline, cast
Disadvantages: none
...a bad thing to say about it. I think I love it so much because I can really relate to the main characters, Marcus, Will and Fiona (like Will I believe we live in an island age!). Based on the book by Nick Hornby (which sadly I haven't read) it is the story of an unlikely friendship between Will and Marcus, and how once you open your door to one person, others are sure to find their way in too. This film showed Hugh Grant move away from his bread ... ...who spends his days knocking about his gadget filled flat, playing pool, getting his hair done, and bedding young swedish tourists. What a departure for him, and unbelievably, he plays it to perfection. After years of notching up broken hearts, Will starts to get tired of being the bad guy. When his well intentioned friends set him with a single mum, he is suprised at how well the relationship goes, and even more suprised when single mum finishes ...

Very rare: All-star-casts + a great, deep plot!
Review of All The King's Men DVD by
LukeParker
Advantages: Deep plot with twists, complicated characters
Disadvantages: Main character not likeable
...story takes place in 1954, all over Lousianna. It happens to run the course of Sean Penn's Political career from lowly origins up to the day the Louisanna Legislature attempts to Impeach him from the Governership. Some might say this story is told about his charachter since it was an extroadinary story, being voted in by the lower class and despised by everyone with power and money there. However, the story revolves around Jude Law's character, a ... ...named, this film shuffles around all these pawns on Penn's chessboard, and you never really know if you love Penn's charachter or hate him... There's something not quite right about him, and it's facinating. The one thing I am sure of after the movie is over is that I don't like Jude's character, who we root for more than once in the movie, and is clearly the viewpoint of the story... So all in all, I have to say I feel a bit let down. It's almost ...

Time at the Bar
Review of Last Orders (Wide Screen) by
heatherrr13
Advantages: very close adaptation from the novel...
Disadvantages: ... though not quite as good.
...we were doing 'Last Orders' last week, I thought I should rent the film from our library.
I really enjoyed the book (as you can see from my review on it), I loved how intricately the characters were drawn; some parts of the narrative were so intimate you felt you could really associate and empathise with each of the characters. The novel is much more character based than plot based, so I was very interested to see how the novel could be translated ... ...film revolves around four men who travel to Margate to scatter the ashes of their friend, Jack Dodds. However, what originally seems like a very simple premise becomes more complicated as we learn more about the cahracters and how their lives are intertwined through a continuous series of flashbacks.
Whilst watching the film the first thing that struck me was how easy it was to watch. Much like the book is very easy to read, maybe I wouldn't say ...

A romantic and transporting movie
Review of Sense And Sensibility (Wide Screen) by
rosieemma91
Advantages: Wonderful acting and great setting
Disadvantages: Not for those afraid of a good cry
This is a story which really captures the heart. Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet are perfectly cast. Thompson as the practical Elinor who alway puts everyone and everything before herself and her emotions, and Winslet as Marianne, the flippant and dizzy girl who must grow into a woman.
The movie's true as possible to the book by Jane Austen, and is perfect if your ideal night in is sitting with a box of chocolates and lots of tissues on the sofa, ... ...Dashwood family.
Hugh Grant is wonderful as the slightly nervous, hopelessly muddled Edward Ferrars, the love interest of Elinor, and Greg Wise is the essence of the fun loving and dashing Willoughby who snares her heart.
Alan Rickman is the good looking and secure, yet painfully overlooked Colonel Brandon, and very almost steals the limelight with his distraught portrayl of the Colonel.
The setting is perfect, and there are some spectacular views. ...

LostWitness
Advantages: Interesting, sumptuous and sexy
Disadvantages: That dreadful title
...happily with her parents in the family home. The family was titled and wealthy but lacked the respect to go with it. Jeanne’s father was considered to be something of a rebel and it was really only a matter of time before action was taken against this. One day, the king’s soldiers arrive at the home, strip the house of its possessions and kill Jeanne’s parents, leaving her orphaned, penniless and broken.
As she grows into a young ... ...restored and dreams only of the day when she can afford to return to the family seat. But despite her every attempt, she is unable to garner the Queen’s attention (Marie Antoinette) whom she believes is the only person who has the power to do anything about her situation. At a musical concert, she desperately tries to attract the attention of the Queen, but instead draws only the interest of a court gigolo named Retaux de Vilette. As the friends ...
