Who's the victim?
Review of A Place In The Sun DVD by
sunmeilan
Advantages: Gripping storyline
Disadvantages: Acting fairly mediocre
Introduction
A Place in the Sun, directed by George Stevens, is a strangely gripping film that leaves you not sure whether to feel sorry for the main character or not. With names like Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift and Shelley Winters in the three main roles, it is not surprising that the film has attracted a lot of attention over the years, although I think that it is the strong storyline and cinematography, rather than the acting that stands ... ...in 1975. He came from a family connected to the movies - his father was a bit actor in Citizen Kane, his brother was a drama critic and his sister became a screenwriter. George first became a cameraman and moved his way up to director. His most well-known films include Swing Time (Astaire and Rogers 1936), Gunga Din (1939), Woman of the Year (1942), A Place in the Sun (1951) and Shane (1953).
The actors/characters
Edward Montgomery Clift was born ...

Sometimes a cat has to bear the heat!
Review of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof DVD by
louised1976
Advantages: Great acting performances, brilliant cinematography, good transfer of stage to screen.
Disadvantages: Sometimes you are reminded it is an old film.
...And that by Maggie the cat bearing the heat for a while, she can accomplish just that.
The only downside is that from the film work and the set design you are reminded that this is a piece which was made in previous decades - but the story is transferrable to today - and should it be made today, not a lot except the quality of fil would change.
Recommended to all as a classic piece of acting, writing and film making from an original script. ...

Cleopatra. The Special Edition
Review of Cleopatra (Special Edition) (Wide Screen) by
TarraWan
Advantages: Outstanding film with excellent Bonus Features
Disadvantages: None
...to take the part of Cleopatra she said "yes, for one million dollars"; to everyones amazement, the studio agreed. The original film budget was only $2 million but by the time the film was finished in 1963 this had soared to $35 million. It is still the most expensive film ever made in real terms (when you take inflation correction into account).
Not withstanding the amazing historical story of Cleoptra's rise and fall; the film has an amazing story ... ...making their mark (or not); tempestous actors and actresses shouting at each other and anyone who disagreed with them in the offset lot. The film certainly inspired passion in everyone who was involved. The film started in Italy but was moved to England when the Rome Olmpics started to interfere with filming. Film shooting also stopped & started part-way through for eight months while Elizabeth Taylor suffered a major illness (mostly she claimed ...

A Sizzling Blockbuster you just HAVE to see!
Review of Cleopatra (Wide Screen) (Special Edition) by
sadoldbag
Advantages: Great production and direction shown off well in this widescreen version
Disadvantages: none!
...must see. The story of Cleopatra is a great one, and this film really delivers on a great script. The chemistry sizzles between Taylor as Cleopatra and Burton as Mark Antony and there are great supporting performances by Rex Harrison as Caesar, Martin Landau, Roddy McDowell, George Cole, Francesca Annis and Michael Hordern, to name but a few. THe most expensive film ever made, at the time, I simply adore every indulgent minute of it. This particular ... ...version with an even longer director's cut, but this is quite long enough, thank you!)
If you've never seen this film then I strongly recommend it. This version has a few rather dated extras but nothing worth bothering with. This DVD is worth buying though as the film is such a great visual trat having it on a great big FST on widescreen is just what it deserves! ...

James Dean movie box set
Review of East Of Eden / Rebel Without A Cause / Giant (James Dean Box Set) (Special Edition) by
LADYFUCHSIA
Advantages: Good value set for a fan
Disadvantages: Only 2 are excellent films, Giant is not as strong
...legend in the making. East of Eden is based on John Steinbecks classic novel - it is a powerful performance. Rebel is by far the most exciting as a film, and is also filmed in colour. The character is much like Jimmy's own character in real life. Jimmy Dean had a difficult relatonship with his father and had lost his mother. The movie Giant is my least favourite, but worth seeing if you are a fan. Jimmy plays a small part, but has a really funny ...
