SATC from a male point of view
Review of Sex And The City - The Movie DVD by
mynameisrui
Advantages: Easy to watch
Disadvantages: Basically an extended episode
...I'd write a review on Sex And The City from a males point of view. Before any comments are made I was dragged along with my girlfriend and had no choice in the matter! She is a massive fan of Sex And The City and over the years I've been subjected to my fair share of it so while I know the characters and some of the background, there is plenty that I don't know.
From what I can gather, the Sex And The City movie is set a few years after the last ... ...of as "that one off Sex And The City."
There is no doubt this film is purely aimed at women! I went on the opening night and the cinema was at least 90% women. This, obviously, meant that there was a ridiculous amount of "oooohhh's" and "aaahhh's" which got quite frustrating at times. I'm a person who wishes people would just shut up in the cinema!
So, as a bloke what did I think? It was ok. There is no way I'd go watch it again even though my ...

Cleaning Vacancies - Apply Within!
Review of Cleaner DVD by
Scotsmanmatt
Advantages: Involving Storyline
Disadvantages: A Bit Slow to Get Into and Slightly Gory
...and you can see why Cleaner was, for me, a must watch movie. Samuel L. Jackson plays the role of Tom Cutler, a retired cop who has now set himself up with the very pleasant business of cleaning the aftermath of bloody, gory crime scenes. Following a standard clean up job Cutler has to return to the premises where he encounters the wife of the victim, Ann Norcut [Eva Mendes] who is oblivious to any crime having being committed in her house or Cutlers ... ...of the situation Cutler makes his retreat and begins some investigation into events. It soon becomes apparent that he has cleaned up a murder that, contrary to all the paperwork etc, had never been documented as a murder. Calling on the help of his old cop friend, Eddie Lorenzo [Ed Harris], Cutler begins the journey to discover what is going on and who has set him up. However, this journey opens up old wounds about the murder of his own wife, his ...

Men are from Mars...
Review of Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown (Subtitled) by
sunmeilan
Advantages: Wacky, bright, colourful, entrancing
Disadvantages: Not everyone will get the humour
...both the clothes that the women wear and the settings, and the music score, which is often discordant and loud, just accentuates this. It could almost be a pantomime - in fact, in some ways, it is a farce, but Almodovar just manages to hold on to the tragedy so that it becomes a really good insight into the tragic lives of women who fall in love with a serial philanderer, with a touch of comedy and farce to brighten it up. This is done so well that ... ...I truly believe men and women are two different species - I've certainly never yet met a man who understands me and vice versa - yet clearly there are some men with an insight into the minds of women, and Almodovar is one of them. This film probably isn't for everyone. It is really full on, with so much going on on-screen that it can be hard to follow the thread of the main story. Newcomers to Almodovar will probably wonder what the hell is going ...

Death as the Route to Life
Review of Ghost Dog - The Way Of The Samurai DVD by
Volta120
Advantages: Offbeat, humorous and thought-provoking
Disadvantages: A little too offbeat for some
...The Basic Plot
Ghost Dog (Forest Whitaker) is an assassin living in Jersey City (although, we're never told that) who holds true to Bushido, the ancient Japanese chivalric code of the Samurai, and is guided in particular by the tenets of Hagakure, a series of commentaries and guidelines that were outlined in the early 18th century. The Samurai is a servant or retainer who pledges his life and sword to a master, and in Ghost Dog's case his ... ...several years before (or so Ghost Dog thinks) and by so doing unwittingly earned the future assassin's loyalty. Between jobs Ghost Dog lives in a shack on the roof of a building with only some carrier pigeons and some books to keep him company. His only human friends are a Haitian ice-cream vendor and chatterbox, Raymond (Isaach de Bankolé), who can only speak French, and a precocious-but-sweet little girl, Pearline (Camille Winbush), with whom Ghost ...
