To become the rule or the exception?
Review of Affliction DVD by
habitualdamnation
Advantages: Engrossing, well-cast and beautifully filmed
Disadvantages: Depressing perhaps
There are few Hollywood actors who can play depressed, disturbed, disillusioned or completely damaged characters better than that man Nick Nolte. Well maybe there are others but none could generate more empathy with the audience than him, considering his repertoire of dysfunctional performances in "The Good Thief", "Simpatico", "Mullholland Falls", "Cape Fear" and "Lorenzo's Oil" to name a few. It is precisely his convincing screen personality that ... ...Driver" fame) effort an excellent watch. Set against the rather Fargo-esque backdrop of an icy New Hampshire small town, this is a bleak story about a redundant policeman who is forced into self-introspection as every department of his life seems to collapse before his eyes. Told through the narrative of his brother (Willem Defoe), we see him go through a murder investigation, a custodial dispute for his daughter and an ongoing dissension with his ...

Erin Brockovich
Review of Erin Brockovich DVD by
lilhabibti
Advantages: Happy Ending
Disadvantages: The story-line is nothing we haven't seen before.
Erin Brockovich is a trashy singgle mother who is not able to get a job because of her little experience. One day while driving she gets hit by another car and which is how she meet and convinced her lawyer to giver her a job. She uncovers evidence that implies that a local factory is poisoning the water supply and hiding it for the local residents. Erin then digges up enough evidence to kick the factorys fat behind and restore the local residents ... ...does not seem realistic that Erin manages to keep her job for as long as she did while dressing like she did and swearing at her boss which should realistically lead to her unemployment. Most of the Characters were well played out however it would have been more entertaining to see more girl fights with Erin and her colleges. Because lets be honest a movie about companies gone bad is not exactly the most entertaining concept we could think of. However ...

==You fill up my senses.....==
Review of Sense And Sensibility (Wide Screen) by
MistyWhisky
Advantages: Great script, beautiful cinematography.
Disadvantages: 2 hours is never enough to do this great book justice.
Of all the Austen adaptations, and I'm a huge fan, this is my favourite. It's dramatically strong, funny without being silly, really respects the female protagionists and is so beautifully filmed that it is perfect from beginning to end. Emma Thompson has written a great script. She does not use Austen's words verbatim, but has created a witty and thoughtful story so in character with Austen that one doesn't miss the 'essential' lines from the book, ... ...Moggach's adaptation of 'Pride and Prejudice', where every line, every scene brought a groan of disappointment. The one glaring mistake for me was that Thompson left out one of the most heart-wrenching moments of the book, when Willoughby returns to Marianne and Eleanor refuses to let him see her. Whether this was due to time constraints or to it putting Eleanor (played by Thompson) either in a detremental light or knocking her character out of the ...

Not a good week for Her Majesty!
Review of The Queen DVD by
kingfisher111
Advantages: Excellent film
Disadvantages: none
...vividly that incredible week at the beginning of September 1997 - the week Princess Diana died. Particularly I remember the complete shock, followed by an outpouring of public grief never known before and probably never likely to be known again in our lifetime, and the hostility vented against the Royal Family for not showing their emotions and instead opting for the 'stiff upper lip!' I was never a big Diana fan, although I did feel her death was ... ...to note that one of the things that this film did not do, at least in my mind, was to come down on one side or another and I think that all the events were depicted in a very honest way.
The key players in this film are obviously the Queen herself, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, the Queen Mother and Tony and Cherie Blair. Princes William and Harry are not shown at all which I think was a very good decision as even after all the time that had elapsed ...

Review of The Way We Were (Wide Screen) by
Blank
Advantages: Robert. Robert, HUBBA HUBBA Robert
Disadvantages: Sorry, none...
...will put my hands in the air and admit that I am fickle and would enjoy this film even if the story were dire and torturous. I simply defy any woman to watch this 114 minute film, and more specifically watch and ogle Hubbell Gardner (a young Robert Redford. Swoon - God certainly outdid himself with this one) and not just love this movie because, well – we’re women and this is one of the perks! However, the movie itself was surprisingly good, or no, ... ...of Africa and MANY more). The movie was made in 1973 (though is set in 30’s to 50’s), and tells the story of the rocky relationship between conservative writer Hubbell Gardner (Hubba Hubba Redford) and Katie Morosky, K K K K Kikki (Streisand) an intense (this may be an understatement) political activist. They go to the same college. He, of course, is popular, an intelligent ‘jock’ but sensitive too and she is on the opposite spectrum, not too popular ...
