More Babble than Babel
Review of Babel DVD by
lona
Advantages: Good performance from Cate Blanchett
Disadvantages: Subtitles and boring
...like to be entertained. Babel is not one of those films I have to say. I think the director strived to intertwine four stories into one movie but to me it did not gel.
First off, the majority of the movie is in sub titles, which did not make the film easy to follow. The movie was complex enough without having to follow subtitles.
The four stories are linked in an obscure kind of way and spans four countries.
The story starts off in Morocco where ... ...movie was aptly named as Babel as to me it was a load of babble from beginning to end and I can not recommend it, unless you are one of those folk who are deep thinking and reading into political things as it did have a political undertone.
Myself, I like to watch movies for the entertainment value and this movie certainly is not one of them.
Director ………….Alejandro González Ińárritu
Writer…………… Guillermo Arriaga
Cast ……………. Brad Pitt ... Richard ...

Babbling on...
Review of Babel DVD by
afy9mab
Advantages: Somre very strong performances.
Disadvantages: Some wishy-washy characterisation and lack of plot.
When an American tourist is accidentally shot in the Moroccan desert, the events have repercussions around the world. The holidaying couple struggle to survive in a country where few speak their language. A Mexican nanny is forced to take two American children over the border illegally. Two young boys get involved in a crime they didn’t intend to commit and a deaf teenage Japanese rebel discovers her father is being sought by the Tokyo police. Circumstance ... ...of loss and isolation. Separated by culture, language and a lack of understanding of their surroundings and themselves, they all struggle to connect with the world.
Like Robert Altman before him, director Alejandro González Ińárritu is fixated on the multi-strand narrative format that links several stories through a single event. It can be a very effective storytelling tool but it can fall flat on its face. This particular example is moderately ...

Babel
Review of Babel DVD by
jacoyeg
Advantages: Great story, directing and musical score.
Disadvantages: Needs 100% attention
Story was very well written, ties together beautifully. The music is powerful and the directing is magnificent. Stunning, very well made. It may not be very fast paced at some parts but some of the stories are tense enough to keep it moving on well. Studies the difficulties of language and cultural barriers very well. All characters are very interesting. Stunningly beautiful in a painful way, some of the cinematography is breathtaking. Would not ... ...it needs allot of concentration and is not always an easy watch at some parts, it deals with a few heavy issues. The directing and music enhance the amazing script from a good film to a great film. I hold this film highly. Would recommend a a good quality wide screen and sound system as the sound and visuals are stunning. ...

ATTICA! ATTICA! ATTICA! ATTICA! ATTICA! ATTICA!
Review of Dog Day Afternoon (Special Edition) by
alexjtear
Advantages: Al Pacino
Disadvantages: No oscar
...a bank robbery in 1972, Dog Day Afternoon tells the story of Sonny Wortzik, who, with his partner Salvatore Naturile, holds hostage the employees of a Brooklyn, New York City bank. From the start the film is a work of art, the opening sequence contains the only music used in the film, the Elton John song "Amoreena". The absence of music adds to the sense of the film being a true story.
Al Pacino stars as Sonny, an optimistic loser who decides to ... ...money for his lover Leon's sex-change operation. This film is smart, sharp, complex, witty (and often quotable) dialogue, and superbly acted. This is a must see film!!!!!!!
Some of the fantastic dialogue:
Sonny: Kiss me. Det. Sgt. Eugene Moretti: What? Sonny: Kiss me. When I'm being f**ked, I like to get kissed a lot. Sonny: So what country do you want to go to? Sal: Wyoming. Sonny: Sal, Wyoming's not a country. Sal: Sonny? You hear that? Sonny: ...

A Beautiful Mind
Review of A Beautiful Mind DVD by
Jammie1000000
Advantages: Great Story and Deeply informative
Disadvantages: Minor inaccuracies to John Nash's life and work
...thought provoking and also gives a great deal of insight into the mental disorder of schizophrenia and how powerful the mind really is.
Plot
This story is based on the true story of John Nash, a mathematician who begins hallucinating and imagining people including a friend and roommate from university, called Charles, Charles' niece Marcee, and a Department of Defence agent called William Parcher. After some time, his wife Alicia informs ... ...real. He is then offered a nobel prize for economics for his extraordinary work into game theory. Cast
The acting in this film is outstading with Russel Crowe (who plays John Nash) putting a lot of effort into the part of this mathematical genius and the viewer really begins to get attached to this character and starts to feel sorry for him.
Jennifer Connelly (who plays Nash's wife Alicia) done some wonderful acting in this film. The viewer ...
