Review of The Way We Were DVD by Blank

Advantages: Robert. Robert, HUBBA HUBBA Robert
Disadvantages: Sorry, none...

...will put my hands in the air and admit that I am fickle and would enjoy this film even if the story were dire and torturous. I simply defy any woman to watch this 114 minute film, and more specifically watch and ogle Hubbell Gardner (a young Robert Redford. Swoon - God certainly outdid himself with this one) and not just love this movie because, well – we’re women and this is one of the perks! However, the movie itself was surprisingly good, or no, ...
...of Africa and MANY more). The movie was made in 1973 (though is set in 30’s to 50’s), and tells the story of the rocky relationship between conservative writer Hubbell Gardner (Hubba Hubba Redford) and Katie Morosky, K K K K Kikki (Streisand) an intense (this may be an understatement) political activist. They go to the same college. He, of course, is popular, an intelligent ‘jock’ but sensitive too and she is on the opposite spectrum, not too popular ... Read review

The Istanbul Blues
Review of Midnight Express DVD by sghawken

Advantages: A cinematic masterpiece
Disadvantages: Overlong at times

...My Thoughts On Midnight Express And Some Trivia --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Midnight Express is the true story of William Hayes. Billy Hayes was played by Brad Davis who died of Aids in 1991, Brad was known as a prolific drug user in Hollywood, but the depth to his performances provided him with a steady stream of work. Both John Travolta and Richard Gere were tipped to play the role of Billy. ...
...the movie industry. Midnight Express is a prison term referring to escape. Midnight Express is a well crafted movie by Director Alan Parker who directed Birdy, Bugsy Malone and Fame. The story though at times a little drawn out is fantastic. Brad Davis spends much of the film crying and going through some serious emotional swings. You have to ask if his sanity was intact at the end of filming. Initially you spend a portion of the film thinking ... Read review

Gut-wrenching, thought-provoking future classic
Review of The Pianist DVD by xtincol

Advantages: Jaw-dropping Brody performance, moving
Disadvantages: That history dictated this film had to be made

...comes to war and cinema, the lines have often been blurred with the supposed romance of it and the glossed over true suffering and degradation of those who truly suffer in war - innocent civilians. The Pianist at a stroke smashes those blurry lines with such clarity, that if if this were a horror or slasher film you'd be grimacing at some of scenes. As this film proves, reality is far more cruel than any fiction. The Pianist is a film that goes ...
...to show the uncompromising, intolerable cruelty of the Nazis against the Jews in all its gruesome widescreen reality. The film opens with Wladyslaw Szpilman (played by Adrien Brody), a brilliant Polish pianist, playing piano in a bar with news of Germany's invasion of Poland already known. What isn't known is that the Germans are very soon to be in the heart of Warsaw, where Szpilman and his family live. Returning home one day, Szpilman and his ... Read review

Don't shoot the Piano-player
Review of The Pianist DVD by FlameDruid

Advantages: This brings history starkly into focus
Disadvantages: It's mostly very depressing

...Polish Jews during WWII at the hands of the Nazis is awful to behold. It's very sobering and although violence in films is probably more commonplace and more widely accepted these days, this is most definitely not a movie for children to see. This isn't the stylish violence of 'The Terminator' or the sharp-shooting Clint Eastwood type. It's brutal; it comes quickly; it happens routinely and frequently, and most of all it's largely deadly and delivered ...
...reveal very much plot as the events of World War II are part of history even though there are crackpot extremists who deny the Holocaust to this day because it doesn't sit well with their hatred for Israel. That isn't necessary. Suffice it to say that we follow Wladyslaw Szpilman's life during these awful War years and see how slowly but inevitably the Nazis set about the total destruction of an entire people. We are taken on a nightmare journey ... Read review

All The President's Men
Review of All The President's Men (Special Edition) by phurren2006

Advantages: Masterful performances from the lead actors
Disadvantages: None

ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN is a film version of the non-fiction account of journalists Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward's investigation into the Watergate scandal, which ultimately ended up with the resignation of President Richard Nixon. This is one of the most exciting stories in American political history and the film was released in 1976 with a great deal of praise and lots of receipts at the box office. The film stars Robert Redford and Dustin ...
...in his work here. ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN has a fast pace, and director Alan J. Pakula really ratchets up the tension throughout the film, and enables any viewer, even those who may expect to find the political shenanigans rather dry, to thoroughly enjoy the movie, in addition to learning a little too. It is wonderful to see that Redford provides a commentary for the DVD release, although Hoffman's absence is notable. However prior to this release ... Read review
