Superman stars in lesbian romp period drama!
Review of The Bostonians (Wide Screen) by Spiderkid

Advantages: Could be worse. Reeves and Redgrave form a formidable on screen duo.
Disadvantages: Could be better. Not an awful lot happens, at all, really.

...Henry James’ novel set amongst the repressed social foibles of 19th centaury middle class America women, which pays careful attention to period costume.’ now would you? Would you? Ok, so perhaps you would, being the conscientious, cerebral, open-minded reviewer that you are, but for us the rest of us, the fickle masses who live from one fast paced thrill-filled moment to the next, the Hollywood hordes who gravitate with herd-like instinct to merest ...
...huffy and depart to read the 367th review of ‘Shrek 2’ (I know that’s where you were going...) I haven’t enticed you here on completely false pretences. This film does star Christopher Reeve, who is, and ever will be, the original, iconic Superman, (although there were no phone booths in the early 1900’s so he sadly remains in his moustached alter-ego for the entire film). And yes, there really are some distinctive lesbian undertones, which, although ... Read review

Remains in Your Memory
Review of The Remains Of The Day (Wide Screen) by avitallly

Advantages: Well acted, scripted, directed
Disadvantages: The character of Stevens will always be Antony Hopkins to anyone who has seen this film!

...film. Okay, it's not in the most obvious way, but this is the way true romantic films should be. In this adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's novel of the same title, Anthony Hopkins plays a Butler, Stevens, who is so loyal and dedicated to his job, that he appears almost inhuman. The film tracks his memories of his relationship with Miss Kenton, the housekeeper, played by Emma Thompson, as they carry out their daily duties in the house, unaware, or turning ...
...the Second World War begins to erupt. Although there is no physical romance, or even spoken words of love to show how close the butler and the housekeeper become, it is obvious to the viewer, and the subtle way in which their relationships is presented makes each look, facial expression and sentence ten times as meaningful as it would otherwise be. The scenery is really lovely, and captures the era well, with subtle changes in weather reflecting ... Read review

Death as the Route to Life
Review of Ghost Dog - The Way Of The Samurai DVD by Volta120

Advantages: Offbeat, humorous and thought-provoking
Disadvantages: A little too offbeat for some

...The Basic Plot Ghost Dog (Forest Whitaker) is an assassin living in Jersey City (although, we're never told that) who holds true to Bushido, the ancient Japanese chivalric code of the Samurai, and is guided in particular by the tenets of Hagakure, a series of commentaries and guidelines that were outlined in the early 18th century. The Samurai is a servant or retainer who pledges his life and sword to a master, and in Ghost Dog's case his ...
...several years before (or so Ghost Dog thinks) and by so doing unwittingly earned the future assassin's loyalty. Between jobs Ghost Dog lives in a shack on the roof of a building with only some carrier pigeons and some books to keep him company. His only human friends are a Haitian ice-cream vendor and chatterbox, Raymond (Isaach de Bankolé), who can only speak French, and a precocious-but-sweet little girl, Pearline (Camille Winbush), with whom Ghost ... great film
Review of Blood Diamond DVD by jo_field26

Advantages: great story
Disadvantages: n/a

I watched this film last night on sky and I cannot believe that I have not seen it sooner especially as I have always been a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio and I was not disappointed by this film in the slightest. This film does require some concentration and at just over two hours it is a long film, but it well worth the watch with a great plot with enormous detail in the film as it based on a real event of Sierra Leone on the 1990's. Solomon Vandy ...

One day he finds a rare giant pink diamond which he manages to hide. Solomon then meets Danny Archer played by Leonardo DiCaprio who is a South ... Read review

The Truth Hurts
Review of Rendition DVD by mummy2harry

Advantages: Good story, Witherspoon and Metwally are great
Disadvantages: Gyllenhaal is disappointing, torture scenes are horrid

...on DVD to see it! Rendition was one such film. The adverts on the television looked great and I was keen on seeing it, but didn't round to it in time, so I decided last week to hire it out on my Online rentals service and got around to watching it this week whilst Harry was napping. Anwar El-Ibrahimi is an Egyptian by birth, but has living in America for 20 years, works as a Chemical Engineer, and is married to an all-American woman, Isabella Fields ...
...subject but such films as Rendition and The Kingdom have taken tentative footsteps in that direction. They have begun to examine terrorism from both points of views, have filmed tough torture scenes for us to watch and have really brought a humanist element to the whole scenario. For me, this was quite a hard watch due to some of the scenes included, but it really made it hit home for me how hard the US strikes when they suspect foul-play, no matter ... Read review
