Review of 8MM DVD by allmarallnot

Advantages: Cheap, good thriller
Disadvantages: None.

...on a single role of 8mm film owned by the millionaire widow’s husband from this his life and career soon start to take him deeper than anything he has ever thought off , throwing him together with aspiring musician but porn store clerk Max California(Joaquin Phoenix). Legal Yawner
Review of A Civil Action (Wide Screen) by wampyrii

Advantages: Ummm
Disadvantages: Ahhh

...Robert Duvall was nominated for a best supporting actor award for his performance in this movie at the Golden Globe awards and the majority of reviews I've read elsewhere have been somewhat favourable......but it bored my arse off. I'm sorry, but it did! A Civil Action is based upon a true story and therefore doesn't involve itself in the theatrics of say, a John Grisham adaptation. Forget witness threatening, last minute key witness appearances, ...
...minutes etc. - instead, its a bit like a day at the office. John Travolta is a partner in a small law firm specialising in personal injury claims. They are ambulance chasers, only involving themselves in cases which they know for a fact they can win - no win, no fee etc. they take a cut of the damages awarded to the plaintiff or nothing at all. Anyway...they come across a case which has been bounced around every other law firm in the state before ... Read review

Beautiful but dull...
Review of A Handful Of Dust DVD by fizzytom

Advantages: Wonderful sets, costumes and music
Disadvantages: Hard to empathise with characters

This 1988 film is a screen adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's novel of the same name written in the 1930s. It is a tale of marital woes amongst the aristocracy - more specifically Tony and Brenda Last. When we meet the couple they have been married for seven years and have a young son who is the apple of his father's eye. The family live at Hetton Abbey, the Last family's ancestral pile. Theirs is an idle life taken up with social functions and entertaining ...
...and the two embark upon a passionate affair. Beaver is the kind of young man who appears quite often in novels of this era and covering this level of society - a young man living beyond his means who spend his life staying with others in their country homes and moving on before he outstays his welcome. Certainly it seems that Brenda's involvement is more to do with an escape from her stifling marriage than it is do with Beaver's appeal - indeed he ... Read review

Sexual Tension… Whew [film only]
Review of A Passage To India DVD by sottovoce82

Advantages: Intriguing, great acting, stunning scenery
Disadvantages: If you don't like drama films, you might find it too long

A Passage to India [1984] . . . In the film which is an almost faithful adaptation of E. M. Forster's novel A PASSAGE TO INDIA (1924), Adela Quested (Judy Davis) and Mrs. Moore (Peggy Ashcroft) travel to India to visit the latter's son Ronny (Nigel Havers), who is also Miss Quested's fiancé. Ronny works there as a civil magistrate who is surrounded by other English employees, and these prefer to stay secluded in a milieu which they created to ...
...but this experience ends as a rather tragic one for both. They get the chance to meet Dr. Aziz who seems to have a revolutionary spirit that is not satisfied with how the English treat his fellow countrymen. When he talks to these two ladies, he notices that they are different from the rest, or so he thinks, and he invites them to go with him and discover certain mysterious caves in India. Here things take a different turn. They start by visiting ... Read review

House MD Series 1
Review of House MD Season 1 (DVD) by Dexter55

Advantages: Gripping, engaging story lines
Disadvantages: Can't think of any!

I've just finished watching House Series 1 on DVD, having come to this series late in the day. Each episode is like a self contained medical detective story. House is a great character, irascible and difficult to work with but forgiven for this because of his great intelligence and snippets of compassion that peek through. The ongoing game of one-up-manship with the hospital administrator adds spice. The story lines are good and production values ...
...an impression of what is happening inside the body, both with treatment and with illnesses. Hugh Laurie is a convincing American. The supporting cast provides a nice mix of characters and the more you watch the more you learn about their backgrounds, so their back histories unfold bit by bit. Great theme tune too! I watched 4 episodes back to back so you can tell how much I love it! ... Read review
