...but promises to tell him all when they get home. However, as Huma leaves the theatre and Esteban runs after her for an autograph he is tragically and shockingly run over and killed.
Manuela is devastated and she reads in Esteban’s notebook how much he wanted to know his father. So Manuela sets off to Barcelona to find Esteban’s father and tell him about the son he never knew.
On arrival in Barcelona Manuela chances upon an old friend Agrado (Antonia ... ...not acting as mothers. Nearly all of the characters in the film are women, except Esteban who dies early in the film and Agrado and Lola who act and behave like women. Without men to interfere Almodovar freely explores the interactions between this fascinating set of “females”. The result is a highly emotional and richly woven tapestry.
The performances are masterful. Cecilia Roth is excellent as the strong willed Manuela who though devastated by ...

thegreengoblin
Advantages: GOOD ACTING
Disadvantages: DOES NOT CONVEY TRUE HORROR OF SLAVES SUFFERING

At over 90 minutes long the plot tells the story of this long 18-year struggle with Wilberforce helped by members of the Clapham Sect to end to end the British slave trade. The film going to the start of those 18 years struggle in 1789 and going from past and present within that 18 year ... ...famous speech in 1789 which is given a blink it and you will miss it part in the film.

Powerful, compelling, vibrant, moving
Review of Amazing Grace DVD by
lobourse
Advantages: Great performances, wonderful screenplay, tight directing
Disadvantages: It can only cover so many aspects
Amazing Grace is a film which documents phases of the struggle of William Wilberforce to bring about the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire. The film was released to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the passage of the Anti-Slave Trade Act in 1807. It has a British director, British screenwriter and a predominantly British cast (one of the main parts is played by an African actor).
= SYNOPSIS =
The film opens in 1797, ... ...the author of the hymn Amazing Grace, he is shaven headed, dressed in sackcloth, mopping the floor of a church. Such is the power of the performance, that Finney totally captivates the audience, and you can well understand that Newton was a mentor to the young Wilberforce. Finney is utterly compelling and completely convincing, especially at the end when he has lost his sight.
Sir Michael Gambon - Lord Charles Fox. Gambon's character begins the ...

Anna and the King personal view
Review of Anna And The King DVD by
clairec73
Advantages: Great storyline, fantastic acting and good action shots
Disadvantages: Will not please die hard King and I fans
...Killers) - Jodie Foster as Anna Leonowens (Panic Room, Contact, Nell, Silence of the Lambs)
The Film is based on the diaries of Anna Leonowens, who died in Canada, Quebec from a stroke in 1915.
I think this is better than the original (King and I) despite my fondness of musicals. The acting is superb and there is a huge cast of extras.
I can't imagine how difficult this was to make a film with the costumes (that are superb) and locations involved.
... ...Fiesty teacher, recently widowed who travels to Siam to teach the children of King Mongkut. There she learns that Siam is very different from all that she knows back in England.
The film is set in the 1860s and the relationship between the Teacher and the King develops from a cold respect for each others values, into a love interest/ sparring contest.
Chow Yun-Fat is magnificent in the title role of the King and plays a philosophical Ruler with ...

Almodovar's Most Complete Collection
Review of Bad Education / Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down / Live Flesh / All About My Mother / Talk To Her (Almodovar Box Set) by
loobylane
Advantages: Witty and Insightful Drama
Disadvantages: Certainly not for subtitle-o-phobes!
...includes recent work such as Bad Education. Pedro Almodovar's work is mainly in Spanish, and although well subtitled, is very fast-moving and would not be suitable for non-Spanish speakers who dislike or are unaccustomed to subtitles. His subject matter is often very challenging, and would not be suitable for those who are uncomfortable with themes exploring gender, sexual relations, the psychology of violence, suppression or sex, or questioning ... ...comfortable with exploring these difficult themes, Almodovar offers a casket of wonders, with his witty and insightful blend of drama: juxtaposing the fantastical with the vulgar. He keenly picks apart the complicated psyche of those who become social outcasts, and unabashedly offers backgrounds which demonstrate the almost linear qualities of his character development. This collection of films is a brilliant, inventive and moving exploration of ...
