2046
Review of 2046 DVD by emzily777

Advantages: well above expectations
Disadvantages: not many really

The movie was well above my expectation and definitely worth a wait. Tony Leung plays the same man with "In the Mood for Love" but has a different character. The movie is also vaguely related to "Days of Being Wild" in 1990, co-starred by Leslie Cheung and Maggie Cheng. All three films are about the mixture of hustle-bustle and weariness of Hong Kong in 1960s. Tony's performance in this film was again brilliant. Faye Wong performed in WKW film for ...
...in 1994, also co-starred by Tony Leung) and made this film one of a kind. Mysterious gambler Gong Li was also attractive. Zhang Ziyi gave me a positive surprise. The film's technical level (costumes, music, photography etc.) is also very high. Someone suggested 2004 Cannes Palm d'Or should have gone to this film instead of "Fahrenheit 9/11" and now I can totally agree. The number "2046" is the metaphor of Hong Kong's destiny, which implies the last ... Read review

The True Truth
Review of 24th Day DVD by sghawken

Advantages: Incredibly thought out
Disadvantages: Annoying flash back sequences

...or not at all. The 24th Day is certainly a movie to keep you on your toes. James Marsden stars as Dan, and he without a doubt owns the movie, his acting style is very real, very true. While not knocking Scott Speedman's performance as Tom, he just fails to stand in the same light as Marsden. If it were not for the bright light that shines from Marsden then you might have a very different movie. What you have as a result is a very powerful, very compelling ...
...your whole attention. Where 24th Day fails is in the flashbacks, this method works well in some movies but fails dismally here. I often find myself looking forward to the flashbacks in movies to see the story progression; here we have a series of brightly lit images that only come together in the final few minutes. If this was a more tense, more horrifying thriller then I believe this would hold more power. However it just gives a feeling of weakness ... Read review

3 IRON (2004) [FILM ONLY REVIEW]
Review of 3 Iron DVD by Charles_Strickland

Advantages: Intensely romantic, atmospheric, a brief display of a future filmmaking genius
Disadvantages: Borrows ever so slightly from Wong Kar Wai's CHUNGKING EXPRESS

...his crumbling body with a 3 iron golf club. The bruised and battered wife, without saying a word to her husband as he gasps for breath in the garden, silently joins the young man on his scooter. They drive off into the night and suddenly home-inhabiting doesn't seem so lonely a life after all, as long as they're together. A warm, astonishing film from an astonishing director, 3 IRON might just break your heart. Although the premise is taken in-part ...
...the young man and, moreso, the bubbling genius of a director who, with 3 IRON, in under an hour-and-a-half, is quite clearly on the verge of creating that rarest of artistic distinctions these days, of filling that vast cinematic chasm of late, with a cinematic masterpiece. May it happen soon. ... Read review

Utterly fantastic. Utterly depressing too.
Review of A Short Film About Killing DVD by stu-willis

Advantages: Superbly shot and acted
Disadvantages: Perhaps a little too grim for some

FILM: A dead rat lies in a murky puddle of filth. The corpse of a cat hangs from a noose in the street, as a group of children run away giggling mischievously. These are the first two images you'll witness when watching Krzysztof Kieslowski's (the THREE COLOURS trilogy) breathtakingly disturbing A SHORT FILM ABOUT KILLING. The film's first third introduces us to three seemingly disparate characters: The first is a middle-aged taxi driver. We first ...
...shift by washing his car. A young couple approach him seeking a lift but he advises them he is not yet ready. Bad move - fate is about to be cruel to him … Jacek is a disaffected youth wandering the streets of Warsaw aimlessly, clearly angry at something. After being turned away from a closed cinema, we witness him impassively observing both beautiful (a young girl having her portrait drawn) and the ugly (a severe beating down a back-alley) with ...
