Twisted aritistic film
Review of A Zed And Two Noughts (Wide Screen) by farmgirlgaz

Advantages: Interesting
Disadvantages: A bit confusing

This film is a film of artistic non-narrative craziness. Peter Greenaway is a man obviously confused by the world in which surrounds him and he searches for answers through his characters and his use of cinematography. The narrative is minimal but effective. Greenaway uses repetitive sounds and ideas that his characters have to create a disturbed feeling in the film. His use of lighting again is repetitive but along with his mise-en-scene it is ...
...us. He uses symmetry as his attempt at describing how the world is. Everything is the same no matter what side it is. Thsi film is one that would bewilder and confuse just an everyday cinemagoer. It entails using real inttelect and concentration throughout the whole film to have any idea at what sort of message Greenaway is trying to put out to us. ... Read review

007 In A Totally Different Role
Review of Archangel DVD by Andy.mack

Advantages: A decent plot, cast and direction
Disadvantages: apparently it was on BBC but never seen it advertised

...recently finished reading Robert Harris's Archangel I was browsing Amazon and came across a TV series that had been made based on the book. I'd previously seen the movie version of one of his other books, Enigma, which was good enough and stayed close to the book so I took a chance on Archangel. If it stayed close to the book like Enigma then chances were it would make a good series. I'd obviously missed the series when it was on the BBC in 2005 ...
...everything pointed to this being quite good. The lead role of Fluke Kelso is taken by Daniel Craig on his way to becoming the latest James Bond. When Kelso learns of an old notebook, believed to belong to Stalin, from an old Russian he starts looking into recovering it. After a run in with the Russian police he teams up with the daughter (Yekaterina Rednikova) of the old Russian who came to see him and a journalist (Gabriel Macht)to try and find ... Read review

Ingenious Masterpiece
Review of Bleak House DVD by ccjhughes05

Advantages: To see a modern day take on an English classic
Disadvantages: Requires your full attention at all times.

A truly inspired adaptation of the Dickens classic, which kept my husband and I enthralled from start to finish. The direction of this multi part drama was cleverly constructed to appeal to all ages, including the new generation with its soap opera style approach by culminating each episode with a cliffhanger the viewer is immediately drawn into the next episode. On the plus side we get to enjoy a continuous slice of todays British and overseas acting ... Read review

The Power and the Passion...
Review of Charles II (Wide Screen) by lofty_on_line

Advantages: Excellent acting, historical value
Disadvantages: Extreme promiscuity could hinder historical enjoyment

Charles II: The Power and the Passion is a superb BBC drama, which I found to be very interesting and enjoyable, with excellent contextually historical events interspersed with a moving and thought-provoking drama about the life and struggles of the first post-Cromwellian king. This royal soap opera takes place on an epic scale, covering the personal events and affairs of the king that lead to 14 illegitame children in the context of anti-Catholic ...
...with the slow-motion beheading of Charles I, but then goes on to become rather less enjoyable with what I believe to be excessive sexual scenes. Despite their historically acurate nature and adding to the drama, I feel that these do somewhat lower the enjoyment of the story. Certainly, with the aging Charles in the final episodes, this is toned down, and the story is very well played, ending with a brilliant depiction of Charles' death, with the ... Read review

SATC from a male point of view
Review of Sex And The City - The Movie DVD by mynameisrui

Advantages: Easy to watch
Disadvantages: Basically an extended episode

...I'd write a review on Sex And The City from a males point of view. Before any comments are made I was dragged along with my girlfriend and had no choice in the matter! She is a massive fan of Sex And The City and over the years I've been subjected to my fair share of it so while I know the characters and some of the background, there is plenty that I don't know. From what I can gather, the Sex And The City movie is set a few years after the last ...
...of as "that one off Sex And The City." There is no doubt this film is purely aimed at women! I went on the opening night and the cinema was at least 90% women. This, obviously, meant that there was a ridiculous amount of "oooohhh's" and "aaahhh's" which got quite frustrating at times. I'm a person who wishes people would just shut up in the cinema! So, as a bloke what did I think? It was ok. There is no way I'd go watch it again even though my ... Read review
