Fortunately, I didn't manage to go and see this one in a cinema, but the interest was still there - so blame it on the title, the director or the actors - I rented it on DVD. And what a mistake to make....well, mind you, it could have been worse, I could have bought it. This film is one of the most predictable, weak, disgusting and pointless nonsense I've come across during my years of animateur research. It's a game in a game in a game - oops, did I give the story away there? No, you should know after about ten minutes, if you aren't one of the people that were actually astonished when the Titanic sank or Harry and Sally got together. It's one of those cinematic adventures where you think afterwards that the idea was good, which it probably was, but the result just doesn't come across and even the normally very convincing acting skills of Jude Law and Jennifer J Leigh are poor in this one. Lost somewhere between a horror version of The sixth sense and Men in black disguised as a drama this film is utter disappointment and a complete waste of time.
Production Year: 2007 - Science Fiction - Director: Francis Lawrence - Original Language: English - Classification: 15 years and over - Starring: Alice Braga, Charlie Tahan, Dash Mihok, Will Smith, Salli Richardson, Willow Smith
Advantages: An intriguing plot effectively and intelligently executed; valid and relevant discussion of current ethical issues related to technology; visually striking and with good cast performances. Disadvantages: Will not reward a viewer who is impatient or in need of a very linear narrative; open to charges of repetition of ‘Videodrome’; are the faults a deliberate part of the simulation or just the result of bad filming?
