I’d seen a couple of trailers for this & it looked pretty good but the actual movie was excellent. The basic story revolves around a games designer & her new game. Computer games aren’t like they are now – the games modules are made of living tissues & plug directly into the central nervous system via the spinal cord. Jude Law plays a character who gets tangled up with the games designer, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh. It’s a very different story & involves slightly icky bits with mutated amphibians but the actors are great especially Jude Law. Throughout the movie, you are often unsure what is reality & what is not? The ending too is kind of uncertain but unlike many films this didn’t bother me. Usually if the end is not neatly tied up, I get very frustrated as to what happens to the characters but this just fits with the whole tone of the movie.

Advantages: An intriguing plot effectively and intelligently executed; valid and relevant discussion of current ethical issues related to technology; visually striking and with good cast performances. Disadvantages: Will not reward a viewer who is impatient or in need of a very linear narrative; open to charges of repetition of ‘Videodrome’; are the faults a deliberate part of the simulation or just the result of bad filming?
