The plot here seems to concern the attempted assassination of the world's foremost virtual reality game creator (Jennifer Jason Leigh). The games are downloaded into a bio-pod implanted into your spinal cord through a living device that is an organism made of mutant amphibian and reptile parts. Cronenberg loves to devise bizarre and often revolting visuals involving the dissection of organs and this film is no different. What follows is a series of realities within realities. The movie is worth seeing for those who like the bizarre, and for those who like low budget films with few special effects and a slow pace. The pace does drag a bit at times, so the story is not always engrossing. However, you never know what is coming next.

Advantages: An intriguing plot effectively and intelligently executed; valid and relevant discussion of current ethical issues related to technology; visually striking and with good cast performances. Disadvantages: Will not reward a viewer who is impatient or in need of a very linear narrative; open to charges of repetition of ‘Videodrome’; are the faults a deliberate part of the simulation or just the result of bad filming?
