David Cronenberg has made gruesome an art form and there are moments in this clever film which are testament to that,(The snack eaten by Jude Law is one of these), but it's the constantly intriguing story which keeps you glued to the screen - the twist is infinitely better than the one in Sixth Sense and I doubt you will get it unless of course you are clairvoyant. It revolves around a time in the not too distant future when game playing is something you plug your mind (well actually the base of your spinal cord) into and actually believe you're in it. From what we're lead to believe this isn't too far away in reality so it makes the film even more fascinating. Cronenberg sticks totally to the intrigue element so keeps us absorbed and occasionally disgusted! Lovely little sci-fi.

Advantages: An intriguing plot effectively and intelligently executed; valid and relevant discussion of current ethical issues related to technology; visually striking and with good cast performances. Disadvantages: Will not reward a viewer who is impatient or in need of a very linear narrative; open to charges of repetition of ‘Videodrome’; are the faults a deliberate part of the simulation or just the result of bad filming?
