deliver a deliberately unacceptable ultimatum to the King who responds by putting his people on a war footing. Confident in their weapons technology and organization's ability to crush the seemingly outclassed primitive enemy the British invade Zululand. General Lord Chelmsford sends in hundreds of British troops in order to squash the spear-carrying Africans with superior fire power. The sheer number of Zulus however overwhelms the British infantry.

I am split on this review while I think that it is worth watching because of Zulu, this film does build on your understanding of that second film and is a good film in its own right but......
Is this just a cash making exercise? The opening shots of a many more bare breasted Zulu women than in the earlier film, makes it clear the film wants to cash in on the original by doing things bigger and better. This film is however an example of where bigger is not always better. The plot is not really up to the scale of the film and much of the time is taken up with dull insuffereable pictures of the British nobility etc,
The film sticks regimentally to the formula of the first but again there is no build of tension as the two armies move closer and closer to confrontation which was such a great feature of the first film. Much time is wasted in the film and you are left with many coffee breaks! O' Toole is not cast well as General Chelmsford is given little more to do than be despondant.
In short if you liked the original and want to know how it all started watch this if you dont care dont bother.
There are no extras to speak of on the DVD - basically they have just cleaned up the VHS and stuck it on a disk - again poor show old chap!!.
Advantages: A true story and a very interesting one Disadvantages: I am British and we are pretty much the bad guys
...best tactics for fighting the Zulu and watch the Zulu king and tribe counter these tactics and use a fair bit more cunning than has been expected of them.
A one armed hero leads the British army into battle, with many of them rightly fearing for their lives unlike their officers who feel it was a matter of when not if they would win the battle. Historians will enjoy this movie immensely, for everyone else though I am still sure its worth the time ...

DVD Description
ZULU DAWN depicts the bloody Battle of Isandhlwana, in which 30,000 Zulu warriors wiped out nearly 1,500 British troops stationed in Natal. The film focuses most sharply on the preparations for battle and the political situation in the region at that time. Taking Zulu chief Cetshwayo's defiant stance on tribal customs as a declaration of war, General Lord Chelmsford sends in hundreds of British troops in order to squash the spear-carrying Africans with superior fire power. The sheer number of Zulus, however, overwhelms the British infantry.
