Zulu in my opinion has to go down as one of the best movies ever made. Some may say the true makings of Michael Caine who plays a typical English officer by the name of Bromhead, his command is a small outpost at Rorke's Drift, South Africa, in charge of the 24th Regiment of Foot in the year of 1879, they later become known as the South Wales Borderers.
Nobody was taking the threat of the Zulu's that serious and the British politicians back in England became complacent and ignored the potential disaster.
The Zulu's thought to be savages, were nothing of the sort, a proud race of people, superb tacticians and great warriors. And there are 4000 of them on their way to Rorke's drift.
This film is loosely based on facts, while there is no doubting the bravery of the men, a lot of other facts had been changed or twisted to make good viewing. It does display the Regiment as mostly Welsh, but I am told that only one third were Welsh.
British Royal Engineer Officer Chard, played Superbly by Stanley Baker is sent there to assist in building a bridge. But has to join with Officer Bromhead and his men against the overwhelming threat.
If this film was produced today, the killing scenes would be so horrific it would have to be X rated, as it is most of the family should be able to watch this film and enjoy it tremendously.
When the Zulu's chant their battle cry, the Welsh boys sing out there Men of Harlech in reply, and it really sends the emotions soaring.
Superb location, good Direction and some Great acting, make this one of my all time favourites.
