This film is a rousing renactment of a war that takes place January 22, 1879 at Rorke's Drift, Natal, Africa. An army of Zulu warriors destroyed a huge British garrison and heads toward the smaller Rorke's Drift. A minister warns unless they abandon the post, all will die.
Naturally, the soldiers stand their ground. The small garrison of 120 men is led by Lt. John Chard(Stanley Baker). His battle tatics are constantly at odds with Lt. Gonville Bromhead(Micheal Caine), a by-the-book officer who calls for retreat. Also in this film is a missionary named Otto Witt(Jack Hawkins) and his daughter Margareta(Ulla Jacabsson).
The narration by Richard Burton makes the film interesting. In the battle scenes, the Zulus, often crouching in the grass and moving quickly in speed and stealth engage the 120 Welsh in hand to hand comabat. Color Sargeant Bourne(Nigel Green) rallies the men with his iron will and calm composure.
As the Zulus pierce the garrison with their war war cries, the brave soldiers shoot and stab their way to safety. In the closing of the film 11 of the 1344 Victoria Crosses were given to the survivors of Rorke's Drift. A 1979 "prequel", Zulu Dawn was made.
Just as the Americans remember the Alamo, the British shall remember Rorke's Drift. So if you get a chance, do see this marvelous, historical war film.
