A work of raddled genius, Stanley Kubrick's hugely controversial 1971 film has lost none of its power to shock.
It tells the story of Alex, a 15 year old who rampages his way through a dystopian future, fuelled by a love of ultra-violence, hallucinogenic milk, and Beethoven's Ninth. When he is finally imprisoned by the state, he is helpless against the ministrations of government psychologist Dr Brodsky, who 'cures' him of his anti-social ways.
It raises all sorts of searching questions about free will and the moral right of authority to control people's behaviour, but this has tended to be overlooked by those who concentrate on its more immediate themes of rape and violence.
The cinematography is stunning, the film's moral viewpoint questionable to say the least, but this film is one of the few - like Jaws, Schindlers List or Taxi Driver - that will leave its mark on you forever.
