Review: With arresting performances... and the visual virtuosity of thriller auteur David Fincher (Box Office, 12/12/2007)

A vastly intricate and dazzling drama... It spins your head in a new way, luring you into a vortex and then deeper still, fascinating as much for what we don't know as what we do (Entertainment Weekly, 12/12/2007)

Magnificently obsessive... A testament to the cinematic savant's gifts... The actors are all at the top of their performance game (New York Times, 12/12/2007)

A meticulous, mind-bending, non-stop mesmerizer of a movie... Something unique and unmissable (Rolling Stone, 12/12/2007)

ZODIAC potently blends the dynamics of the newsroom drama with those of the police procedural (Sight And Sound, 12/12/2007)

Conveying an astonishing array of information across a long narrative arc while still maintaining dramatic rhythm and tension... David Fincher's most mature and accomplished work (Variety, 12/12/2007)

DVD Description

David Fincher's (FIGHT CLUB, SE7EN) adaptation of the Robert Graysmith book masterfully transports viewers to the Bay Area in the 1960s and '70s by drawing on actual case files from the notoriously unsolved Zodiac killer mystery. As a murderer with seemingly random targets starts sending terrifying threats and cryptic codes to police and publishers all around San Francisco, fear and paranoia descend on the city. Through slow pacing, Fincher creates an effectively chilling atmosphere in which he spins a thick web of character-driven plotlines. Early scenes depicting the Zodiac's first-known murders vividly capture the victim's fear and agony and will leave viewers haunted. When the Zodiac’s ciphers arrive at the San Francisco Chronicle, they spark the interest of Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal), a young cartoonist with a penchant for puzzles. As the former Boy Scout earnestly tries to decode the messages, eccentric reporter Paul Avery approaches the case from a career-boosting angle. Meanwhile, a string of investigators from four jurisdictions carry on a complex and unsatisfying search for the elusive killer. Inspectors Dave Toschi (Mark Ruffalo) and Bill Armstrong (Anthony Edwards) at times collide with Avery and Graysmith, whose interest in the case extends long after most have given up. Even at two-and-a-half hours in length, this dense murder mystery should manage to keep its audience riveted throughout. Paired with stellar performances from Ruffalo, Downey, Gyllenhaal, and countless others, a clever script produces well-developed characters, and the film's art direction, music, and costumes all combine to create an authentic sense of time and place. The sombre tone of the atmospheric thriller gives the film a documentary-like aesthetic at times, lending weight to the story’s facts while never relying on cheap tricks. Unlike murder mysteries such as THE BLACK DAHLIA, ZODIAC invites viewers to develop theories of their own, allowing them to come to their own conclusions.

Zodiac - A film classic
Review of Zodiac DVD by  layton101

Advantages: Stars Jake Gylanhaal brilliant actor, As good as Fight Club & Seven
Disadvantages: Twists in film not as unpredictable as in Seven but still good

...The acting in this film is brilliant Jake Gylanhaal is awsome as usual Mark Ruffalo is really good also the director david fincher has done a brilliant job this film is just as compelling and thrilling as his other two master pieces seven and fight club. The story of the film is exciting and gets you thinking the twists in the film are good, they are obviously not as good twists as in films such as fight club because Zodiac is based on a true story and actual events however we are left guessing throughout the film. We know that the Zodiac was never officially caught but we are left with a pretty certain opinion of who he was and when you see the film you will realise this. We also never knew why the Zodiac carried out these killings, because the film is based on a true story and because the Zodiac was never officially caught this makes... Read review

The Last Boyscout
Review of Zodiac DVD by  utero

Advantages: Great Cast, Well Acted, Beautifully Shot
Disadvantages: A bit slow in places

...such as 300 as well as a teaser for a forthcoming directors cut of the film. Apart from that there's a making of which runs for over twenty minutes and gives a good account of how the film came about and what it's intentions were. In reference to the directors cut, it's already available in the US and should you be looking to buy the film then that's the version worth getting hold of. With a host of commentaries plus extensive documentaries on the film and real life case it sounds like another rewarding package. - Finally - Zodiac is a great film and will certainly be best appreciated by those who like to see a well constructed examination of crime.... More signs than the Zodiac
Review of Zodiac DVD by  christianfilmcritic

Advantages: Intense, realistic and some good performances
Disadvantages: It is quite long

...think "Zodiac" works so well, as none of them seem want to steal the show from anyone else. One of the noticeable things that "Zodiac" has is atmosphere and it is no surprise when you realise that the director of the film is David Fincher, a man who previously directed films such as Se7en, Panic Room and The Game. Fincher manages to not only take us back to the 60s and 70s but also create an atmosphere of suspense. At times he may drag things out slightly too long for my own liking, but for the most he hits the nail on the head. Personally I liked the way he worked the characters rather than the action and for me was the reason why the film was so compelling. Where I do feel he may have alienated some audiences is to have not put in the level of suspense where something like a phone ringing in a silent room will make you jump, but then I... Read review
