I remember watching Jumanji years back in 1995 and at the time being younger thinking 'Wow!' I was completely blown away by it and thought how clever an idea it was and how well made it was - it was so exciting every time they took a turn and you were wondering what was going to appear!
When I heard that a film called Zathura was to be released back in 2006 I was intrigued as could it really live up to Jumanji - after all it was titled 'Zathura - A space adventure' and had the tagline 'from the world of Jumanji'. So it was obviously being marketed as the next and more modern Jumanji but could it really be as good?

The story:
Two squabbling brothers, Danny and Walter end up playing an old game found in their basement out of boredom when their Dad leaves their older sister Lisa, in charge whilst he goes to work. Before they realise what the game is they end up in outer space where they encounter an astronaut and an array of other people and things. Under attack from Zorgons and fighting to stay alive they must finish the game to be able to return to earth. Will they be able to stop arguing and finish the game with the help of the Astronaut or are they doomed to stay in space forever?

The cast:
I thought the lads who play Danny and Walter were good for the part as they suit the roles. The actress who plays Lisa doesn't really have a major part but, does it well in what we do see and the Astronaut is the only other major part that we see for the majority of screen time. The full cast list is below -

Danny - Jonah Bobo
Walter - Josh Hutcherson
Astronaut - Dax Sheppard
Lisa - Kristen Stewart
Dad - Tim Robbins
Lead Zorgon - Derek Mears

The cast is relatively unknown really as nobody stands out as a major actor - or at least not to me anyway! Probably most well known is the actor Josh Hutcherson who plays Walter who has appeared in the more recent Journey to the centre of the Earth as Sean. I really do think that the cast did well in the roles they had to make it fun and enjoyable to watch.

Extras:
My DVD has a variety of extras which are listed below -

Jon Favreau and Peter Billingsley commentary
The making of Zathura
Visual effects commentary
The cast featurette
The world of Chris Van Allsburg
Miniatures featurette
'Making the game' featurette
Zorgons, robots and frozen Lisa featurette

To be honest most of the extras are to do with the making of the film but, just different elements and areas of it. It is quite interesting to watch as a lot of work goes into making a film with so many special effects and it is quite interesting for me personally as I know Jon Favreau as more of an actor than director and so I found it nice to see his thoughts on this film.

Overall opinion:
I did really enjoy this film - yes it is different to Jumanji and of course that element of what viewers had the first time seeing that film has gone as people know the kind of thing to expect because it's already been done. However this film is obviously more modern and also has a new twist with robots and the like rather than animals from a jungle as in Jumanji.
It is fun and there is still the other element of what will arrive out of the board game every time a turn is taken. I think overall it is a good family film - maybe not for younger children but, certainly for those older ones who will like the action and great story.

The film is rated 'PG' so parental guidance is advised and the DVD can be bought from various high street and online stores at around the £5 mark but box sets with Jumanji included can be bought for a slightly bit more.
