A double bill of family adventure films based on novels by Chris Van Allsburg. Zathura ... more
(Dir. Jon Favreau 2005): Actor-turned-director Jon Favreau (Elf) delivers another work of intelligent charming family fare with this space adventure. Older brother Walter (Josh Hutcherson) and the younger Danny (Jonah Bobo) are constantly at war with one another bickering over the mediating voice of their long-suffering father (Tim Robbins). When he has to go to the office to replace some papers the boys destroyed in their crossfire he leaves them in the dubious care of older sister Lisa (Kristen Stewart) who is sleeping upstairs. When Danny discovers an old board game called Zathura stored in the basement his excitement is lost on Walter who has no time for such old boring toys. Soon however the game becomes impossible to ignore as the boys are transported into space and one of them must win in order to make it home again. Each turn brings a new often dangerous surprise and the boys are faced with a murderous robot an explosive meteor shower and lizard-like aliens while poor Lisa is cryogenically frozen early in the game. Jumanji (Dir. Joe Johnston 1995): When young Alan Parrish and his friend Sarah (Bonnie Hunt) begin to play a mysterious board game they don't realise its unimaginable powers until Alan is magically transported into the untamed jungles of Jumanji. Twenty-six years later Judy (Kirsten Dunst) and Peter (Bradley Pierce) discover the dusty board and reawaken the game as they begin to play. Instantly the forces of Jumanji release a fully-grown bewildered Alan Parrish (Robin Williams) into their world. With each roll of the dice they must face the increasingly terrifying consequences until the game is finished and the victor had uttered the word Jumanji...

The basic premises of the film is: two brothers (Josh and Danny) find a board game called Zathura in their new house and decide to try it out, once you start it then you have to finish it. Along the way, they find out that playing this game is going to be a lot harder than they first expected, with a lot of twists and turns along the way. The game unleashes the feared Zorgorns, and catapults the house into space, where the two boys along with their sister end up fighting for survival with the help of an astronaut who has a mysterious identity.
Overall the acting was good and generally believable, the main cast were- Jonah Bobo: Danny Josh Hutcherson: Walter Dax Shepard: Astronaut Kristen Stewart: Lisa Tim Robbins: Dad While I hadn't actually heard of any of these actors, I did recognise both Josh Hutcherson, who I later discovered to have a major part in RV, another family film and Tim Robbins who I remembered seeing in The Shawshank Redemption. However, Kristen Stewart has now gone on to become very sucessful after her part in Twilight, and I'm not sure if thats maybe because she was noticed in this.
It was rated as a PG, and it doesn't have anything that bad in, the only thing is that it might be scary for really young children, hence why its a PG. There's no bad language and no sexual or drug references.
I'm not too sure how much my copy costs, since it was given to me as a present but it's available in all the big retailers (play.com, amazon, hmv, etc) and it's not more than £10.
One thing that I could find to fault the film on is the soundtrack, I can't remember it at all, which doesn't seem too good.
However, one really good thing about the film was the special effects, there were a lot of these used since it was in space and they all looked really good, nothng too high end but they were still excellent for a kids film. One example of these was the zorgons, the monsters who invaded and set things on fire.
Overall, I would recommend this film and it would probably be best for 5-12 year olds. If you like Jumanji, then you should like this.
Advantages: Good acting and great story that is full of adventure Disadvantages: None
I remember watching Jumanji years back in 1995 and at the time being younger thinking 'Wow!' I was completely blown away by it and thought how clever an idea it was and how well made it was - it was so exciting every time they took a turn and you were wondering what was going to appear! When I heard that a film called Zathura was to be released back in 2006 I was intrigued as could it really live up to Jumanji - after all it was titled 'Zathura - ... ...of Jumanji'. So it was obviously being marketed as the next and more modern Jumanji but could it really be as good?
The story:
Two squabbling brothers, Danny and Walter end up playing an old game found in their basement out of boredom when their Dad leaves their older sister Lisa, in charge whilst he goes to work. Before they realise what the game is they end up in outer space where they encounter an astronaut and an array of other people and things. ...

Advantages: Imaginative, Suspenseful, relatively gore-free Disadvantages: Nothing - honestly, not a thing
desperately frightened of our kids losing the ability to create and dream without a hand-held console or interactive DVD to explain how to do it.
Zathura ? a spaceadventure is a wonderfully imaginative and creative film and the script caters to kid?s ability to make the most fantastic ideas into a reality. This film celebrates the impossible and illogical and explores an entirely different universe. Like a kid?s imagination, there were no limits imposed on the script. An abundance of unrealistic scenarios like random meteorite showers and their sister being cryogenically frozen are introduced to the story not to mention random meat eating, heat-sensing giant space lizards to contend with. This craziness only adds to the child-like adventure of the film and the viewer is instantly opened up to a world of possibilities.

Advantages: Good clean family fun Disadvantages: Perhaps a little long for little ones
When two bickering brothers discover a dusty old board game called Zathura, little do they realise how involving it will be. Once they start to play, they and their whole house are whisked into outer space. There they must fend off aliens, rescue lost astronauts and get round the board so they can return home. But can they stop fighting long enough to realise they must work together to succeed?
Director Jon Favreau created one of the most enjoyable Christmas films in the supremely entertaining "Elf". Here he does the seemingly impossible and makes a reasonable sequel to the highly successful "Jumannji". It's pretty much the same concept, but Favreau has enough imagination to make the world of Zathura stand alone. For a kick-off, he makes the kids the centre of the story, coaxing engaging performances from his young stars ...
Advantages: Incredible effects & fun plot twist Disadvantages: Too much like Jumanji
The Author of Jumanji released this screenplay that was just barely different enough from Jumanji to be made into a movie.
It was smarter than Jumanji, with incredible effects, once again, but it lacked the extra star quality that Robin Williams brought to the screen the first time. Sure, they tried to make up for it by casting Tim Robbins as the father, but he didn't stick around for any of the action.
So throughout the movie we're following two quarreling young brothers, ages around 9 and 12, and their 16 year old, completly stereotyped sister who thankfully is in suspended animation for half the movie. Too bad she wakes up, but she does get involved in one funny joke towards the end.
As long as you're able to set aside the whole "can breath in open space" thing, then the adventures they have in their house that's for no ...

ZATHURA is a rarity: a stellar fantasy that faces down childhood anxieties with feet-on-the-ground maturity (Entertainment Weekly, )
In the enchanted limbo between waking and sleeping, ZATHURA feels both real and unreal, like a dream you could shake off at any moment. (New York Times, )
Favreau and his effects team have fun with the retro-futurist stylings of the game....The relatively restrained use of computer imagery is refreshing... (Sight And Sound, )
DVD Description
Actor-turned-director Jon Favreau (SWINGERS, ELF) delivers another work of intelligent, charming family fare with ZATHURA: A SPACE ADVENTURE, based on the book by Chris Van Allsburg (JUMANJI). Older brother Walter (Josh Hutcherson) and the younger Danny (Jonah Bobo) are constantly at war with one another, bickering over the mediating voice of their long-suffering father (Tim Robbins). When he has to go to the office to replace some papers the boys destroyed in their crossfire, he leaves them in the dubious care of older sister Lisa (Kristen Stewart), who is sleeping upstairs. Each turn brings a new, often dangerous, surprise, and the boys are faced with a murderous robot, an explosive meteor shower, and lizard-like aliens, while poor Lisa is cryogenically frozen early in the game. The adventure yields some heartwarming, family-friendly life lessons, and Dax Shepard (IDIOCRACY) is unusually subdued in his role as a stranded astronaut.
