The Plot ========== A modern version of the Ernst Lubitsch film "The Shop Around The Corner", this film follows the development of a romance between Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) and Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan). Kathleen runs a book shop in New York which was passed down to her by her mother. In a sense, Joe also runs a family book shop business. The only difference is that his family's business is a multi-million dollar corporation who are set to put Kathleen's shop out of business by building one of their own just around the corner.
Kathleen and Joe first meet on the internet. A romance develops between them but they do not give each other a lot of personal details so do not know who the other is. In real life however, they do not get on with each other at all. To Kathleen, Joe is "the enemy" and Joe likes Kathleen no more than she likes him. Although we know from virtually the outset who they are, neither of them knows who the other is until they arrange to meet up ironically so that Joe can try to help Kathleen save her business.
Joe doesn't tell Kathleen that he is her online "boyfriend" and the two relationships (one online and one real) continue to weave on to the conclusion of the film.
My thoughts ========== Although this is a romantic comedy, I personally would say it is more comedy than romantic. The romance seems to serve as a platform for the comedy. In some films, the audience knowing more than the characters can spoil the film but in this case, it adds to the film as the audience is kept on tenterhooks throughout the film by the "will they, won't they" tension.
Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are good actors and work well together to make this romance and the love-hate relationship work. I found myself drawn into the film and really hoping that things would work out. There is a slight anti-climax feel to the film after Kathleen's shop closes and the ending is slightly predictable but these are minor negatives relative to the overall film.
For me, the best aspects of this film were the comedy and the suspense.
Blurb on back cover of video ====================== "Three little words. Three rapturous words that Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) and Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) long to hear: You've Got Mail. Superstore book chain magnate Hanks and cosy children's bookshop owner Ryan are anonymous e-mail cyberpals who fall head-over-laptops in love, unaware that they are combative business rivals. Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey and Jean Stapleton add perfect support to this modern day romance. You've Got Mail delivers all the wit, charm and warmth you'd expect from a reunion of the stars and director of Sleepless in Seattle."
The Cast =========== Tom Hanks: Joe Fox Meg Ryan: Kathleen Kelly Greg Kinnear: Frank Navasky Parker Posey: Patricia Eden Jean Stapleton: Birdie Conrad Steve Zahn: George Pappas Heather Burns: Christina Plutzker Dave Chappelle: Kevin Jackson Dabney Coleman: Nelson Fox John Randolph: Schuyler Fox Deborah Rush: Veronica Grant Hallee Hirsh: Annabelle Fox Jeffrey Scaperrotta: Matthew 'Matt' Fox

Conclusion ========= I did not like "Sleepless in Seattle" but I like this enough to have watched it again more than once. Although it is a little bit cheesy and I know what is going to happen, it is always a pleasure to watch and each time I watch it I notice jokes I didn't previously spot. I would therefore recommend this for purchase if you are a romantic comedy fan or rental if you are not.
