Hanks + Meg Ryan + love/hate relationship might be just a tad predictable. George Fenton might just have thought so, because here's an effortlessly predictable score that presses your every emotion button perfectly. It's an exercise in piano whimsy, with a small bouncing ensemble lapping up the opportunity to get very schmaltzy indeed. When you're incorporating "Over The Rainbow" into the body of your score, it's a sure-fire sign there's no need to roll out a booming percussion section. Getting "Butterflies In The Subway" at the start, and thinking "If Only" at the end, this is a gentle piece of floatiness. Being such a romantic writer (check his excellent heart-on-the-sleeve scores for Ever After and Shadowlands), this is right up George Fenton's boulevard. --Paul Tonks

reunion of the stars (Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan) and director (Nora Ephron) of Sleepless in Seattle. Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey, Jean Stapleton and more talented co-stars add perfect support to this valentine to modern - to modem - romance in which superstore book chain magnate Hanks and cosy children's bookshop owner Ryan are anonymous e-mail cyberpals who fall head-over-laptops in love, unaware they are combative business rivals. You've got rare Hollywood magic when You've Got Mail.Addicted To Love:What would you do if that someone special dumped you? After seeing the delightful Addicted to Love, the better question is what wouldn't you do!Meg Ryan and Matthew Broderick take a funny look at love's obsessive side as Maggie and Sam, teaming for revenge when their exes (Kelly Preston and Tcheky Karyo) team for romance. Sam simply wants his girlfriend back. Maggie wants to get back at her old flame. So all over New York's Soho, they unleash their diabolical plot. If successful, the two who spurned them will be hapless, hopeless, loveless. And if Cupid has his way, Maggie and Sam just might go from a jilted Who's Through to a romantic Who's Who.

The romantic comedy reunites "Sleepless in Seattle" stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan with director and writer, Nora Ephron. Meg is an owner of a cosy little children's bookstore, called The Shop Around The Corner. Her name is Kathleen Kelly, and she is devoted to her shop. She loves her customers and her colleagues, who have always worked with her. The shop has special sentimental value to her as her mum used to run it, but she died. Tom Hanks plays Joe Fox, the manager of book superstore Fox Books.
They both live in New York, and meet by coincidence in a chat room on the internet. Kathleen (shopgirl) and Joe (NY152) start emailing frequently. They both do this secretly, and don't tell their partners even though strictly speaking nothing is going on...they don't even know each other's names, and agree "no specifics!" But of course, they're slowly falling in love, each time they switch on their laptops and connect they wait impatiently for three little words that mean so much..."You've Got Mail."
And what should happen next, but Joe Fox has a new superstore opening in New York...right near The Shop Around The Corner. Kathleen knows that this is bad, that they will lose business to the huge store that offers so much more- apart from Kathleen's love and devotion. Regardless, she carries on with her shop.
One day, Joe Fox is in Kathleen's shop (before his store has opened) with two kids (not his kids!) and runs into Kathleen. Of course they don't know who each other are, but somehow he can't bring himself to tell her that he's Joe Fox, as he finds her so attractive. He leaves the shop having only told her to call him Joe, dragging the two kids with him before they drop him in it.
Shopgirl and NY152 are still emailing, and she mentions that she needs help (with her shop, but without telling him this). Of course Joe wants to help and give her advice, but she argues that it would include specifics. She gives him enough information for him to tell her that she must fight.
So she does! Also, NY152 asks Shopgirl if she wants to meet. And we all gasp audibly as we wait in trepidation to find out her reply...yes, she wants to meet him! However, it all goes horribly wrong. By this point, Kathleen and Joe have bumped into each other several times and near enough hate each other! On the way to the "date", Joe takes a friend. He asks the friend to look through the window and tell him if she's good looking. Well Joe finds out that it's Kathleen, and stands her up because he is so disappointed. Although, later he goes back to the cafe and sits down to talk to her...but doesn't tell her that he is her date! And so enters a new twist into the story...he knows who she is but she doesn't know who he is!
And so the film continues, and if you're wondering what happens to the relationships that they already have, well they both split up. I don't want to ruin the storyline but just so you know it's nothing tragic or violent.
I was wondering if I should tell you some more about the story, but I've decided not to because it's fairly predictable anyway and I want to make it worthwhile you watching the film!
The Actors--
As Jonathan Ross said, "Hanks and Ryan are magic." And I totally agree! Not at one point in the film did I ever doubt the way these two characters felt about each other. I absolutely fell in love with Kathleen, from her bouncy walk to her cosy bookshop. And of course everyone knows that Tom Hanks is just brilliant, as he proved in Forest Gump. However he adapts perfectly to this role, and there is no question about how good those two look together.
The film also stars Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey and Jean Stapleton who all add to the story perfectly.
The soundtrack is good, I seem to remember liking several of the songs. All the music seemed to complement the film very well, and it was always in the right place. I do know that at some points over the rainbow is in the background, and it is played at the end too.
Conclusion--
In parts this film is funny, not hilarious comedy that will have you rolling around on the floor, but everyday humour that will make you smile and chuckle. It's not always even a line that somebody says, at times it's just the way Ryan walked down the street on her way to meet her cyberpal, very quickly and sometimes breaking into a trot then steadying herself and slowing down. Little things like that would have my mum and me smiling. It is a very good film, and you can't fault the actors or their performances at all. It's not hard to follow, it doesn't require any thinking. You can just sit back and enjoy. In some ways the film seems to lack something, but I think this is in the storyline and the fact that it is so predictable and it is clear what will happen in the end, it's just waiting for it.
If what you're looking for is an enjoyable romance with good acting and a few laughs then I do recommend this. It's a lovely film, although I think the ending was a bit concise. I don't want to spoil it....but it seems that as soon as what you've been waiting for the whole film happens....it's the end!
Warner Brothers Directed by Nora Ephron, produced by Nora Ephron and Lauren Schuler Donner. Running time 114 minutes Rated PG- a good family film.
Advantages: It's Tom and Meg, you have to watch Disadvantages: I can never get my hair to look like hers
F.O.X – Fox. Joe Fox, how dare he do THAT to ‘The Shop Around The Corner’!! I suppose that for the premise of the film this harsh act had to take place, but it REALLY is a lovely shop. OK, OK, I know it’s only a film, but it’s the only one with Tom Hanks in that I really got miffed at with his character, if only he would make up his mind, nice or nasty? But lets face it, it’s Tom, he HAS to be nice in the end.
... ...they have in common is that they sell books, and one has a bigger empire than the other, it can only spell disaster. She hates him, he wants her business, and just like almost always in real life, the big guy..what do you think? This excellent Rom Com has all the ingredients that make a true chick flick, and one that even seems to appeal to some boys amazingly.
Nora Ephron, screenplay writer and director, has worked her magic like she did in ‘Sleepless ...

My initial thought was oh no Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan together again. In this film Meg Ryan plays the owner of a small family book store. Tom Hanks plays the owner of a large book store chain that is moving in to compete with Meg Ryan's small operation. Both of the film's main characters live in New York and enjoy their regular online experiences thanks to America On Line. They mainly chat through e-mail. Personal situational problems are shared by ... ...film used brief e-mails rather than the rather substantial ones that "online love" usually will entail. Tom Hanks' character, figures out early on that his online companion is the female owner of a competing book chain. He uses situational manipulation techniques to get closer to his female friend with each meeting, while carefully keeping the fact that they are friends via e-mail a closely guarded secret. This perhaps spoils any possible romance ...

Some films are designated oozy cutie films that are tailor made for those romantic evenings in with the spouse/partner, or those tear spilling evenings when you are alone wondering why you cannot get someone just like Tom or Meg, why fate has dealt you the losing hand and why your life is like a pile of poop.
But…what the hey?
Seriously, these films seem to fall off the conveyor belt like a ready-made doll, and you know what? You just cannot ... ...just so the film studios can make big bucks and the actors can get paid millions for doing nothing much save for looking cute/brave/pretty/handsome…
You’ve Got Mail is one such film.
We watched it again last week and immediately fell into the oozy cutie trap. We watched the love between Tom and Meg blossom, we laughed at the whimsical comedy scenes.
So, to the plot…

Following the success of Sleepless in Seattle, it was inevitable that sooner or later a studio would get Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks back together for another movie.
You’ve Got Mail not only takes the two stars from Sleepless, but also the director, and why not – there’s no need to break up a winning team. The basic synopsis is as follows: Hanks and Ryan met in a “over 30s” chat room on the internet and have been in communicating ... ...exchanged any personal details but are drawn together by their electronic conversations. Ryan is the owner of a small children’s bookshop, threatened by the opening of a discount book superstore around the corner, run by Hanks. In business they are enemies, not knowing about their private relationship.
Extra features include a trailer, director’s commentary, a featurette, a look at New York’s West Side, isolated score (Dolby Digital ...
