Carl is a man who doesn't say "yes" to much. As a result he has managed to be rejected for promotion and has become isolated from friends as he lets them down time after time. Endless DVD nights on his own are commonplace and his life becomes more tragic by the minute. However, a chance meeting with an old friend may well change all that as Carl is about to become the man who likes to say yes!
"Yes Man" is massively different from what I was expecting. The concept is almost a verbatim copy of Jim Carrey's previous film "Liar Liar" and I was expecting more of the same. However, refreshingly this is a more subtle affair from that rubber-faced slapstick comedy. A gentile romantic-comedy, "Yes Man" contains a surprisingly subdued Carrey and is better for it. Carl's self-loathing and pity is clear from the outset and this makes him an immensely likable character. Carl's revelations as his life changes drastically simply by saying yes to everything make for entertaining viewing.
As with many romantic comedies a lot hangs on the emerging relationship of our protagonist and his emerging love interest. Fortunately, the quirky, stumbling relationship between Carl and the eccentric Allison is endearing and funny in equal measure. I have never encountered the strangely named Zooey Deschanel before but she is perfect in the role of free spirit Allison and adds a different type of beauty to the usual love interest of Hollywood perfection.
Everything about this film is a little bit unusual. Despite being modern it has a decidedly eighties retro feel complete with power ballad soundtrack. There is still the boy meets girl formula and there is the odd classic Carrey face pull to keep fans happy but it is a testament to the film that these feel out of place. A comparatively unknown cast, Carrey excluded provide great support with Carl's boss nerdy Norman particularly David Brent inspired.
"Yes Man" remains a film that is far better than I was expecting. However, there is one thing I did not like and that was the odd bit of "American Pie" gross out humour thrown in seemingly at random. I like a gross out movie as much as the next guy but this endearing rom-com could really have done without pensioners giving blow jobs in exchange for chores. It detracts from a film that is otherwise all warm fuzzies and hope.
This is still one of my favourite Jim Carrey movies in quite a while. This restrained performance from Carrey benefits from a lack of the one-man show arrogance so often prevalent and makes this is a stand out romantic comedy. Coupled with some great supporting performances you have a film that is well worth your time.
