- Story -
Carl Allen is an unhappy man who shies away from alot of things, preferring to spend time with himself. His friend often calls him to invite him out with friends for the night but he wants to avoid running into his ex-wife so he does't take the calls. One day, he's told about a personal development program, which he attends a local seminar on, where they explain that in order to move on and become a happier and more positive person, you have to say yes and not no and good things will come from it. He's quite sceptical at first but his friend encourages him to follow through and it doesn't take long before a number of random events takes place which leads to good things happening in his life, in his personal and work life. Things are looking up for Carl but can it really last? is it such a wise idea to say yes to absolutely everything? you'll have to watch the movie to find out.
- Thoughts & Opinions -
This is a fairly typical Jim Carrey movie, in a similar vein to Liar Liar, in that it has a fairly moral story or meaning behind it but it is also quite amusing. Jim is his usual comical self, although he doesn't pull as many of his 'out there' rubber face type expressions as he has done in previous movies I think. I thought it was quite amusing and it made me think
too, I guess the story did hit home in a sense, in that I tend to be quite avoidant when it comes to trying out new things, I like to stick to my routines and perhaps there is something to be said to changing and going outside your comfort zone a little to try out new activities and be more of an open minded 'yes' man than a stick in the mud 'no' man, or person. Some scenes were quite funny and it is quite entertaining. I thought it was quite funny, in a surreal way, when there was a scene where a man was on a ledge of a tall building and Carl ends up singing a song (Jumper by Third Eye Blind about telling a man contemplating suicide not to do it), that was particularly random and kind of funny, especially considering the mans reaction to it (which isn't what you might think).
Terrence Stamp playing the speaker at the seminar was a good choice, he plays quite an eccentric character and what happens near the end where Carl encounters him again, was quite amusing and made me laugh. Some of what happens in the movie is quite amusing and I didn't feel totally bored by it but yet it did seem pretty predictable as well, the story is pretty obvious but it doesn't mean it isn't worth seeing as a general light entertainment, comedy movie, it could have been worse. I think the characters make up for the otherwise rather obvious script. Apart from the main character, Carl, who is pretty bland in one sense, or to start with anyway and the motivational speaker, who appears near the start and at the end of the movie, there's another character, called Allison, who is quite likeable and who plays an important role in the movie too and then there's Carl's boss, Norman, who's quite possibly the most eccentric character in the movie, being the manager of the bank branch Carl works at during the day but a fan of nerdy costume parties at night!
Of course you could criticise the movie as not being too realistic in terms of what happens mid way through the movie, you may feel that its too simplistic and that if you yourself were to follow this way of life, I suppose, the outcome would be different, to put it one way! but I think this is addressed as the movie continues, things take a different turn and you could say that Carl learns to be cautious by the end, if thats not too much of a giveaway... also there is one particular scene which may make you squirm, it isn't graphic but lets say he's offered something by an elderly neighbour which most normal people would run away from and it puts him in a rather awkward position, so you've been warned! lol but I wouldn't like to add anything else as I feel I've already said plenty as far as the plot is concerned.
I think overall I quite enjoyed the movie, it made me chuckle at points and it made me think about things too, so I quite liked it, although for critics out there, its also true that it is quite predictable in terms of the general story behind it and it might not be for everyone, those who have seen many of Jim Carreys other movies may prefer to stick to those, I don't think Jim is as over the top as a comical actor in this role, as he has been in previous ones (mind you that might appeal to some!) perhaps and its not the funniest movie I've ever seen but it is good and I quite enjoyed watching it.
- Would I Recommend It?-
Yes I'd recommend it as an alright comedy movie with a message behind it. Its not the best nor the worst comedy and it is fairly predictable but yet I feel I quite enjoyed it and if I did, others may well do too. Judge for yourself based on what I said above, whether you might enjoy it or not, I can only go by what I thought. I think its worth renting but not worth buying as a full price DVD, personally, or wait until it comes on TV if your not so bothered but I did quite enjoy watching it and I did watch it through to the end without starting to think about other things as I do if a film gets so long winded and boring, so it could definitely be worse.
Thanks for reading my review, I hope you found it useful and thanks for any and all r/r/c's. This review may also be posted on DooYoo UK and Lovefilm under my username which is the same name, IzzyS.
