with their accompanying promo videos. Hardly comprehensive, the selection does at least chart a fascinating period in the band's history, from the classic line-up of 1977'sGoing for the Onealbum and their biggest hit of the decade, "Wonderous Stories", to their mid-80s transatlantic incarnation with tracks from90125(the ubiquitous "Owner of a Lonely Heart") andThe Big Generator.Yes were never an especially photogenic bunch, and on the evidence of these videos not comfortable in front of the camera unless simply standing playing their instruments--quite rightly the music was always the most important thing with this group. Most striking here are not the rather unimaginative visuals but the various fashion disasters: their collaboration with Buggles Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn on theDramaalbum yielded some fantastic music--"Tempus Fugit" and "Into the Lens" are here--but the same cannot be said for the band's appearance. Later performances with Trevor Rabin uncomfortably attempt to transform the group from a bunch of gawky musos into slick US-style rockers. Oddly, perhaps the most satisfying video is the period costume piece for "Madrigal" (fromTormato), featuring Rick Wakeman seated at his harpsichord in full 18th-century regalia. Short introductions to each song are provided by band members, filmed during their 1991Uniontour.On the DVD:Yes Greatest Video Hitsis disappointingly presented in NTSC format, with bog-standard 4:3 picture. Sound is basic stereo. There are no extra features. --Mark Walker

Advantages: Everything you could want in a TV show Disadvantages: None
To try and put the greatesthits of The Simpsons onto one disc is foolhardy. There are so many classic, touching, hilarious episodes people love that if they did do a greatesthits package it would be so long that it wouldn't be able to fit on anyone's shelves, that is the quality of this show.
So this DVD, part of "The Simpsons Classics", contains 4 episodes, each accredited with some sort of landmark. We have "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire", which was the very first episode and deals with Homer not getting his Christmas bonus, but in the end gets something much better. There's the 100th episode "Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baddasssss Song" where Bart gets Principal Skinner when he brings Santa's Little Helper into school for show and tell day. There's also "Bart Gets an F" which had the highest ever ratings in America for a Simpsons ...
Advantages: All the best songs in one place Disadvantages: Not worthwhile for the aged-old fan
channels and maybe it does get the odd bit of 'extra' airtime. (E.g. "Close To Me" being on a BBC Three programme...it's name escapes me, but it may have been the 'Smoking Room'? Answers on a postcard...)
Their 'greatesthits' album, released in 2001 through Fiction Records and only done so on the basis that Smith could choose the tracks himself is 19 tracks that show a chronological tale of the band and their music through the years. (Although two of the tracks are brand new!)
Opening track "Boys Don't Cry" was released in June 1979, eight years before I was born. Yet with it's instantly recognisable guitar riff it's something that the countless bands since then that have idolised and 'taken influence' from the Cure could take the rest of time to improve on. I believe the saying is along the lines of put some monkeys in a room ...
Advantages: Great tracks old and new Disadvantages: None
with the stunning elegance and the beauty of lyric phrasing of Lena Horne, and she is Whitney Houston." Spoken in 1985, he was definitely true!
Generally I tend to think that greatesthits albums are a waste of money because if you have all the artists other CD's you probably have most of the tracks anyway but this album is well worth it. It's the one place where you can get all her old classics, as well as new songs and some funky duets.
The album comes as a double CD but if you get the DVD version you also get music videos of past hits, live performances and interviews. The music videos are great as you really see her in action.
The CD was released in 2000. Like I said it's a double CD and each CD has a really cool title. Disc 1 is called Cool Down and features her more chilled, love songs even though she still belts out some cracking vocals ...
Contains 13 of Yes's biggest hits, including such classics as 'I've Seen All Good People,' 'Leave It,' 'Owner of a Lonely Heart,' 'Hold On,' 'It Can Happen' and 'Wonderous Stories.' The videos are introduced by band members.
