The third installment of Bryan Singer's X-Men trilogy has him abandon ship, allowing Brett Ratner to take over directing duties, as the mutants have to rise up to protect themselves against humans and a genetic cure against mutation. But this time human ignorance isn't the only thing that the team have to face up to. They also find themselves once again pitted against their own kind as a powerful brotherhood oversaw by Magneto (played wonderfully once again by Ian McKellan) fights against the movement to allow mutants to become human, and an internal force in the guise of Jean Grey (Famke Jannsen) who has been possessed by a darker force that can suck the life out of her fellow mutants. As the trilogy draws to a close, the mutants find themselves in a life or death war against all sides, choosing to fight it, rather than give up their uniqueness to become human.
X-Men and X-2 were superior films in every way, this one relying on run of the mill battle sequences that leave you a bit cold. There is no question that the cast fit into their mutants suits beautifully now, each one so familiar it would be hard to imagine them in any other role, but it doesn't deviate from the fact that the film is an empty vessel that lacks the soul of the first two installments. Perhaps the exit of Bryan Singer (who was away doing other superhero turkey of the year "Superman Returns") is the reason, but given his own aforementioned product's emptiness and plodding reliance on how it looks, I would suggest that the mutants have ran their course, and anything after X-2 was never going to be worth the bother. That said, it isn't a complete let down. There is plenty of entertainment on show, the special FX are amazing as usual, and it ties up all the plot threads set up over the three films. Completists and fans will go daft for this film, but anybody else will switch it off at the end feeling disappointed that such a promising set up has come to an end in such a drab ordinary way.
The DVD is available in a 1 disc format, 2 disc format and as part of a trilogy box set. The extra's are informative enough, if not entirely engaging. I would just stick with the 1 disc format to be honest, as I probably wont every watch anything on the second disc again.

How about telling us what's on the 2nd disc and why you wouldn't watch it again? You've selected "DVD" as the review type, but said virtually nothing about the extras.
