Fans of the X-Men series of films will love the 2009, Gavin Hood, prequel film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine explores the origins of the X-Men characters, Logan/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) from his younger days in the nineteenth century when he discovers his regeneration powers along with his brother and fellow mutant, Victor Creed (Liev Schreiber). Wolverine and his brother Victor spend years fighting in wars to satisfy their violent desires and skills. They eventually join Colonel William Stryker’s (Danny Huston) and his Team X of mutants. It is during this when Wolverine undergoes the bonding of his skeleton with the indestructible metal adamantium, which gives him his trademark strength. Wolverine’s bitter conflict with his brother, Victor Creed is also explored.
This is an enjoyable film with a good story that is exciting and answers questions about Wolverine’s past. Hugh Jackman is good as the brooding hero who struggles to control his violent tendencies. Liev Schreiber is decent as Victor Creed and Danny Huston does well considering he had to fill the shoes of Brian Cox from the X-Men 2 film. There is support from Dominic Monaghan and Ryan Reynolds who play mutants in Team X. The special effects are brilliant and there are some great action and fight scenes. There is a cameo at the end of the film which will delight most X-Men fans. This is one to watch.
