The makers of this film have, sensibly, chosen to risk disappointing hardcore X-men fans by using it to introduce us to the main characters and their mutant abilities, as opposed to jumping straight in an assuming we are all familiar with them. This bodes very well for a sequel, which will expand the current characters, while at the same time introducing new ones. The story is surprisingly good; it's technically an action film but the plot isn't just tagged on to fill the gap between special effects. The climactic battle in the film is a let down though - you're left feeling as if it should be the build-up-to-the-end battle and that the film has been cut short. Having said that, everything is in place here for another successful franchise. It has been very popular, but is that something to do with the fact that we haven't had a proper summer blockbuster movie?
