Having been a big big fan of the X-men in their original printed form for many years I approached the movie with mixed feelings. Superhero adaptions to the big screen have had a chequered past. There have been the classics like the first 2 modern Batman movies and the middle of the road attempts like Spawn (great effects shame about the script)down to the abysmal Spider Man and Superman attempts.
However my fears proved to be unfounded. Allowing for the constraints of having to introduce the characters and concepts to an audience not grounded in the X-Men's history this film does the business.
There are enough little touches thrown in to make the X-Men regulars feel like they haven't been forgotten whilst allowing the story to unfold at a good pace.
Some may complain that their favourite characters were left out. Sure we'd all like to see Gambit , Archangel and all in living colour but there is only so much on screen time that any character can have and I feel that the balance is just right.
Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is played superbly and it's really his film all the way.
The two leads for the respective groups are nicely played by Patrick Stewart and Ian Mckellen.
The rest of the well known but hardly big name cast also make a good showing of themselves and there is plenty to build on for the obvious sequel.
