Based on the long-running Marvel comic book series, X-MEN takes place in the near future, as certain humans are evolving into mutants with special powers. In the Canadian...
more...wilderness, a young runaway mutant named Rogue (Anna Paquin) and a bad-tempered, quick-healing mutant with retractable metal claws called Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) are suddenly attacked by the powerful Magneto (Ian McKellen) and his lackeys. Fortunately, Cyclops (James Marsden) and Storm (Halle Berry), students of the compassionate Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), interfere and bring them back to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Here Wolverine and Rogue learn more about the conflict between Xavier and the militant Magneto, who wants to power a device that will genetically alter humans, with possibly deadly results. Only Xavier's students can stop Magneto's plans.
Director Bryan Singer (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) displays his expertise with an ensemble cast, accomplishing a feat by making the first live-action film about an entire group of superheroes. Hugh Jackman's portrayal of the ill-tempered Wolverine is dead-on, while Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are ideally matched in their Martin Luther King, Jr.- and Malcolm X-like roles. Smart and well-paced, X-MEN towers above most comic book movies.

Full review
X-men is a film by 20th century fox. The film is based on the popular marvel comic by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The comic was first produced in September 1963 and has been a huge hit since then. The comic is about a team of super heroes that are mutants. Charles Xavier is the professor and teaches the mutants how to use their mutant powers to make a world where mutants and humans can live together in peace. Not everyone shares this view and Magneto a very powerful mutant believes that humans must be destroyed so that mutants can live in peace.

The film follows the story of these mutants and their fight to fit in to society and to stop magneto from wiping out mankind. Charles Xavier is played by Patrick Stewart (Star Trek, Conspiracy Theory) and is the perfect person as not only does he look like the professor from the comics and the cartoons (the bald head) but also he’s such a good actor. Xavier has amazing telepathic powers and mind control. He leads a team of mutants known as X-men. In the begging this team consists of Jean Grey played by Famke Jannsen (House on the haunted hill, The Faculty, Goldeneye) she is a doctor who also posses physic abilities but not as powerful as the professor. Halle Berry (Who do fools fall in love, The Flintstones) stars as storm. Storm has the power to control the weather. Also Cyclops played by the gorgeous James Marsden (Sugar and Spice, Gossip, Disturbing Behaviour) he has the power to shoot a devastating ray from his eyes which is why he wears the red goggles to control the intensity of the ray and so he can see without destroying everything.

In the film, we are introduced to a young who is just discovering her mutant powers-Rogue (played by Anna Paquin who has starred in Finding Forrester, She’s all that, Fly away home) on her travels she bumps into another mutant Wolverine. Wolverine played by Hugh Jackman (Erskineville Kings, Paperback Hero) has 3 metal claws imbedded into each hand. He also has the power to heal cuts and wounds, which comes in very useful.

Xavier takes in rogue and wolverine but Magneto (played by Sir Ian Mckellen Gods and Monsters, Richard III, jack and Sarah, Last action Hero) has other plans. He has his own team of mutants:

Mystique-played by Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me)
Toad-played by the fantastic Ray Park (Star Wars: Episode 1 the phantom menace-he played Darth Maul)

The film is just jam packed with special effects. Rebecca Romijn-Stamos who played mystique had her make-up applied, which took 10 hours. This involved about 70 self-sticking silicone prosthetics and a hell of a lot of blue paint! Gordon Smith special creature effects supervisor had to make 15 different sets of Wolverine’s claws. Some were metal others where plastic or flexible. In the whole film, there were 512 special effects. These included the fight between storm and toad on the statue of liberty.

The film is 100 minutes long and every single minute is really cool. I was a huge fan of the comic and the animated series so I was really excited when I heard they were making a film and I wasn’t disappointed. Bring on the sequel!
