X Men is a screen adaptation of the cartoon series that has (in my opinion) graced our television screens. It stars some of our favorite x-men; Storm, Jean Gray, Cyclops, and of course the leader of the team, Professor Xavier, played expertly by Patrick Stewart.
The film is a mature version of the original cartoon, typically taking a more global angle to the mutant situation. The world in the film is full of prejudice against mutants, humans inflicting both violence and social exclusion against any that develop mutant powers. And no one has any warning of whether or not they possess mutant genes. Upon discovering their extraordinary powers, a mutant is faced by minimal options. Society will not accept them. A great deal run away, as does Rogue, where our story begins.
Lonely and with nowhere to run, Rogue meets Wolverine (as he is to become known as), another bitter and disgruntled mutant forced to hide his powers. In an accident of events, Rogue and Wolverine end up under the direction of Xavier, and although neither is willing, they eventually become an active part of the X -Men team. The X-Men are striving to convince humans that they can live in harmony, and at the same time they are helping mutants come to terms with and control their very individual powers. The task in hand is tough enough, but this team has an added complication. Not all mutants feel as they do about humans. Some are, unsurprisingly, remarkably bitter and vowing for vengeance against those who shun them. A very powerful mutant named Magneto - due to his capabilities of controlling anything metallic through his own magnetic powers - refuses to believe anything indifferent from his view that the two species can never co-exist. As the story unfolds, we discover his horrific plans for the future of the human race, and only the X-Men can stop him. When he kidnaps a very frightened and insecure Rogue, it is a race against time for the X-Men to save both her, and humanity.
The film is full of state-of-the-art special effects, and the feats demonstrated in it are amazing. It is, in essence, of action/superhero genre, but for anybody who watched the cartoon, it is a must. Having said this, as an avid watcher and fan, I was disappointed in the portrayal of Rogue, my favorite X-Man. Those of you that know her cartoon character will be aware that she is enthusiastic with her powers, a very strong, yet very sassy, female member. In the film however, she is far from this, instead being naïve, reluctant to exert any force and all in all a bit of a liability. As a fan of Rogue, this is not an accurate adaptation from cartoon to film. If this was the kind of character Bryan Singer (director) wanted, he should have run the story around Jubilee – the young, new recruit from the cartoon. Rogue has too much get-up-and-go to be reduced to the pitiful character cast in this film.
Having said this, it is full of surprises; a real white-knuckle ride as you try to guess what Magneto’s plans are and admire the developments as the story unravels. At times it can be quite heavy going, but as a relief from the drama, there are witty one-liners, such as Wolverine’s comment on yellow lycra (which he does not wear in the film!)
A good length, with plenty to leave you sufficiently in awe of the stunts and special effects co-ordinators.
All in all, a pretty decent film.

good op. well written, I'm quite a fan of the xmen myself. I think the take they are having on rogue is that she will develop in future films into the confident and outgoing rogue that we all know. It's just a shame that there weren't more xmen pictured, maybe colossus or angel etc. treeman
