When Bryan Singer directed X Men in 2000, he always maintained that it was merely setting the scene for a bigger and better film version of the much loved comic book. In 2003's X Men 2, he shows what he meant as he directs a returning cast on top form and with a meaningful plotline.

The Plot
This second installment of the X Men films hits s much deeper note than the first, touching on the effect the mutants and their exposure has on the rest of the world, as well as the fear of the unknown and the unfamiliar. After an assassination attempt on the President of the United States by an unknown mutant, the X-Men find themselves joining forces with Magneto and his henchmen in order to save mutants as a whole. The assassination attempt has heightened the fear in the human race, and they are calling for the extinction of the mutant race! It is the joining of enemies for the greater good.
The Cast and Performances
The original cast from 2000's X Men return in their roles for X2. HUgh Jackman performs very well as Wolverine, and in this film we get to see the true beast behind 'Logan' as the Xavier Mansion comes under threat. Halle Berry as Storm, Famke Janssen as Jean Grey and James Marsden as Cyclops do very well in a more supporting role, deferring to Wolverine as the X Man under the spotlight. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen do steal, though, as Professor Xavier and Magneto respectively. The interaction between them and the realisation that they have to work as a team comes across very well on the screen. Brian Cox also gives a good turn as Colonel Stryker. The newest main character in the film is the mutant Nightcrawler, the German teleporter played beautifully by Alan Cumming.
My Opinion
This is a very good sequel to X-Men. The first film kind of paved the way for a film such as this by setting the scene and providing an overview on the X-Men and mutants. X2 has much deeper political topics on show, and they are handled with great maturity. People may find parity in these issues with many issues at large in the world currently as well, particularly with terrorism so much in the fore these days. Political unrest and a lack of trust are also dealt with, but the best part is that these are done so in a fantastical way. You never get the impression that this is TOO real, as it involves mutants, works of fiction. This combination of driving home real issues in such a creative manner makes this film work very well.
This follows the same mould as X Men in giving the comic book a more modern uplift, with the characters again appearing leather-clad. One of my few criticisms with the first film is that too much attention is paid to Wolverine in comparison with the other X-Men, and the same could be said here, too, of X Men 2. However, this time we have the deeper plotlines, which masks character favouring.
A criticism I have of this film is that at times it does seem to drag. I do not wish to contradict myself, and the plot is very good, but sometimes the script drags it out a bit too much. The film is 128 minutes in length, perhaps it could have been less.
Conclusion
A very good sequel, definitely in the ranks of sequels that are as good as the first film. I rate X Men 2 at 4 stars, as I have done X Men (2000).
Advantages: Good Performances from cast. Good Script. Disadvantages: Drags quite a bit.

=== Plot ===
After the events at the end of the first movie, Magneto is still locked inside his plastic prison, and is deemed secure. However after a a attack on the United States President by an assassin mutant, once again leaves the humans mistrusting the Mutants. General William Stryker, goes to extreme lengths to eradicate all mutants, by breaking into the Proffessor ... ...the rest of the X-men are away searching for the assassin who attacked the President.
After Magneto escapes from his prison, he temporarily teams up with the X-men to stop Stryker from wiping out the entire mutant population.
=== My Opinion. ===
I saw this when it was first released at the cinema, and the beggining part with Nightcrawler trying to reach the president while fighting off his body guards, was at the time a extremely good opener. ...

Advantages: good story line hugh jackman Disadvantages: slow in places
i loved the first x-men and could not wait to see this one but i found it a bit slow in places so overall not as good as the first but it does get better as you watch and ends up being a brilliant film . it stars the wonderful patrick stewart (of star trek next generation fame where he played captain piccard ) in this he is playing xavier the head of a school for mutants that is people with special powers i.e the ability to make lightening strike,to ... ...the power of their minds.
in this one the president give general stryker absolute power to wage a war on the mutants forcing them to team up with magneto their arch enemy from the first xmen to prevent a deadly confrontation.

Advantages: You don't need to watch the first one to enjoy it. Disadvantages: none
You don't need to watch X-Men to enjoy X-2. There are some references to the first movie, but not to the point where you will need to watch it to understand. This movie is the best of its class. The first ten minutes of this movie captivates its audience into wanting to see what happens next. The special effects are outstanding. One specific thing with this movie is that they kept the original actors from the first film. There was only one minor ... ...movie, have their own unique way of relevating, key points of the X-Men history. Without them, the development of the plot would not be as effective.
Overall, I would recommend this film to everyone. People of all ages and backgrouds would enjoy this fictional story. 100% in my books. ...

Advantages: Great for adults and children alike Disadvantages: A long film with a cliff hanger of an ending
Having watched the film at the cinema twice I must highly recommend this film as a gift for x mas. This dvd is packed full of action shots which will amaze and entertain the younger viewer. However there is more to this story than explosions and computor generated images for the kids. The film has several sub plots that will also keep the adults entertained.
Without giving to much away about the film which some opinions I have read do:-
- The film raises questions of acceptance and discrimination as ther mutants try to intergrate in to a "human "society.
- The character of Wolverine is on a quest to find out where he originated from and has a love interest continued from the first film
- Then there is films main plot which is very clever in itself.
There are excellent performances form Ian Mckellan (Magneto), Patrick ...

Advantages: Better action than some with story line Disadvantages: slow in parts
If you love the first X-MEN then X-MEN2 is a must have, with less story building than the first this film has a lot more action - packed fun for all to love.
There are a few slow parts in the film but overall its a must. the charachters realy start to evolve and if you were a fan of the cartoon then the end makes a lot more to you than if you just watch the film.
Although you are left felling that they could have done more.
E.g. Magneto (Lan Mckellen) and the X-men could have helped eachother a little bit more instead you could still see they didn't want to work together to save the mutants.
Patrick Stewart ( Professor Xavier) still owns the show even though he is in a wheel chair. A top actor for a Top Film.
Fantastic four is again much like X-men 1 you have to wait for the best bits as the story building takes its time however ...
Advantages: Hugh Jackman. Hugh Jackman. Oh, and Hugh Jackman. Disadvantages: you do really need to see the first film before this
's arms? For a year and a half I have been re-watching the first film and drooling over the trailors on the X-Men 1.5 DVD, waiting for the 2 hour Hugh-fest that is X-Men2. I even have two X2 movie posters on my wall at this very moment.
Don't commit me just yet, please.
Before you see this film, I would recomment renting or buying X-Men, the first in the series, to get an idea of what's going on. It's not necessary but it will clear up a few queries you might have, and introduces the characters in more detail.
In X-Men2, we meet all the old characters:
First the X-Men themselves - Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), Wolverine/Logan (Hugh Jackman), Storm (Halle Berry), Cyclops (James Marsden) and Jean Grey (Famke Janssen). We also have extended roles for Rogue/Marie (Anna Paquin), Iceman/Bobby (Shawn Ashmore) and Pyro ...

DVD Description
X2: X-MEN UNITED, the remarkable sequel to X-MEN, picks up shortly after the first film's finale. At the White House, a would-be assassin--the acrobatic, teleporting blue mutant Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming)--menaces the president. Meanwhile, in the Canadian Rockies, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) searches for answers to his mysterious past at the top-secret facility where he received his metallic skeleton and claws. Back at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) and Storm (Halle Berry) instruct students Rogue (Anna Paquin), Iceman (Shawn Ashmore), and Pyro (Aaron Stanford), while Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Cyclops (James Marsden) pay a visit to the imprisoned Magneto (Ian McKellen). However, Magneto has a secret weapon in the shape-shifting Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos). Soon allies and enemies alike will unite to defeat the hate-filled military scientist William Stryker (Brian Cox), who wants to rid the world of mutants. When Stryker launches a ruthless two-pronged attack that leaves the school under siege and Xavier and Cyclops captured, Wolverine and the remaining X-Men must spring to action to save their friends and prevent all-out genocide. Even better than its excellent precursor, X2 delves deeper into the X-Men mythology, introducing new characters and touching on essential storylines from the decades-long run of the Marvel comic book series. Providing larger action-packed set pieces and more advanced special effects, director Bryan Singer further develops the characters of Jean Grey, Storm, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Iceman, Pyro, and Mystique. Each member of the cast breathes vitality into their mutant characters with Wolverine, perfectly portrayed by Jackman, once again the wild heart at the centre. A love letter to longtime fans of the comic and an amazingly entertaining movie for everyone else, X2: X-MEN UNITED is that rare breed of sequel that manages to improve on the original in every way.
