After watching the first X-men, I was looking forward to seeing the second one. So me and some friends went to see it the weekend it came out, and personally I was delighted, thrilled and dazzled, it is actually better than the first one!
Story The X-men are mutants, people born with weird and wonderful powers. Charles Xavier's School for the gifted is where mutants are trained how to use their gifts, but also how to become accepted in the mainstream world. They all seem to be pulling together as a community, but a secret government conspiracy, is digging away at the surface of there extended family, until one night, they declare an all out war with the mutants, they take over the Xavier mansion, but luckily all of the young, and older students get out in reasonable good condition. Wolverine, Rouge, Bobby, and Pyro, go to Bobby’s parents house, for refuge, but his parents are unaware, of Bobby’s well, gift. As the day progresses Bobby’s family become more and more nervous around him, until his brother
phones the police and they are completely surrounded. Wolverine, Bobby and Rouge try to reason with the police, but it turns out that Pyro is a bit of a dark horse, he manages to blow up everything in sight, and make the general publics opinion of Mutants worse. Meanwhile Storm and Jean Grey are in Moscow, searching for a mutant that has come up on their radar. This mutant is Kurt Vagna A.K.A Nightcrawler, a mutant with the ability to disappear into thin air, and reaper anywhere he likes, Storm and Jean have got to bring him back reluctantly, to the school, for tests and shelter. As if things weren’t bad enough for the X-men, there is a new bad ass in town, and she’s bigger, bader and better than Wolverine in every way, after all it is his sister. This mutant is Lady Deathstrike, who was made by the same professor as Wolverine, and it seems he has improved his little experiment. Magneto is still in a glass prison, but he and Mystique are doing all they can to change that……… All of the mutants seem to have their own problems, but as things get from bad to worse, for the first time they all have to band together, in the ultimate fight, between mutants and humans.
Performances • Hugh Jackman isn’t one of my favourites I have to admit (Did you see Van Helsing?) But his performance, is good as Wolverine, he has the arrogance, the cockiness and the roughness down to a T. He really is very believable as Wolverine (Well as believable as a mutant who can shoot spikes at of his hands can be!) The tough guy role suits him, and he’s probably better than most of those people today (VIN diesel anyone?). Not the best performance is the movie, but adds to the character. • Halle Berry is criminally under used, what is the point in having, a talented, beautiful Oscar winning actress, if you’re not going to give her a good meaty role, but no, Halle has to put up with, witty come backs and cheesy one liners. She pulls Storm off easily. It wouldn’t do any harm giving her something more challenging to do next time would it? Pull’s off Storms character, but can do it standing on her head. • Famke Janssen is becoming, more and more hot property in Hollywood and you can see why from this performance, it’s really remarkable. I like the way she plays down, Jean. She adds sexiness and spice to her otherwise bland role. A really up and coming star. Good performance, probably best in film. • Patrick Steward is pretty good as the one, the only Charles Xavier, the founder of it all, not much script to work with, but pulls of his character with charm and finesse, a true professional. • Anna Paquin, is excellent as Rouge, she plays Rouge, with real, I don’t know, real strength almost, you see her come from being a little girl, to a full grown bad ass mutant. • Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, doesn’t act as Mystique, but boy is she good to look at.
Production Values As you would expect from a 110 million pound production budget, the speacile effects are amazing, and I mean dazzling. All of them look completely real. The whole movie is very glossy and well turned out, really excellent.
Direction Brian Singer, seems to have a real passion, and understanding, of the X men universe, he keeps the comic book fanatics happy, but adds something new for just movie goers (like Me)
Overall An exciting, but maybe a little to long comic book movie, which does the unthinkable by improving on the first. Great acting, great speacile effects, Iand great direction, but the script flounders a bit at the end, over all a must see.
The End (Nearly Forgot) I am going to go against all the critics now and say, i thought the end was powerfully acted and touching. I wont spoil it for others, but it is all about sacrafice, and regret and love. I enjoyed much better than the average, the super hero saves the day and gets the girl.
