THE PLOT: After a ten year break, Mulder and Skully are back to investigate the abduction of FBI agents and a self castrated paedophile who can magically see visions, including where the agents are.
MY OPINION: I grew up with the X Files, and must have watched nearly every episode. A year or so ago, I rewatched a few, and realised they weren't as good as I thought. However, I was still delighted to see Mulder and Skully back in the mix, and intrigued to see what they now looked like more than anything!
The movie is, sadly, not very good. There's nothing original or interesting in the storyline, and the acting is one dimensional like back in the old days - Mulder is the montone man who shows no emotion, and Skully is pretty much the same. There's a love story between the two which is what we'd always wanted, but it seems forced and unreal.
Billy Connolly takes a lead role as the psychic paedophile, and I just can't take him seriously as an actor after spending so many years watching his stand up comedy.
The ending is bizarre and completely unrealistic too! It's 104 minutes long, and seems to end quite prematurely - perhaps the writers were out of ideas on where to go next.
In conclusion, hardcore fans will find nothing new here, and anyone coming to the film without X Files knowledge will find it lacking too. It seems that the X Files crew were lured in by the 'cash for remakes' trend that Rambo, Rocky, Indiana Jones and others have gotten into, but like the worst of those, it has nothing to offer other than what it was doing before, and the rest of us have moved on; if you're going to bring back a classic, it needs to have something new to it (like the new Rambo) else we may as well just re-watch the oldies!
