As an X-Files fan back in the day, I was a little disappointed in this film. It was actually quite a good film, but I somehow expected so much more. The biggest problem for me I think was the fact that there wasn't much 'X-Files' about the film at all, it just seemed more like a good, crime thriller of a film instead. The X-Files: I Want to Believe is the second movie to be created following the hit tv show The X-Files, made famous back in the 90's. The movie was released this year, and is directed by Chris Carter, who also directed and produced the original series. The movie stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, and also sees Billy Connolly, Amanda Peet and rap & tv-star Exzibit appear.
When an FBI agent goes missing, the only leads the FBI have come from a disgraced priest, Father Joseph Grissman (Billy Connolly), trying to redeem himself from his sinful past, who claims to have psychic visions of the occurrence. Baffled, and with no other leads to go on, the FBI turn to ex-agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). Mulder, who is wanted by the FBI on other charges, agrees to help when all charges against him are dropped.
Mulder, who wants to believe in the psychic ability of the priest, and Scully, who detests the priest for his past, and refuses to believe in his abilities, renew their partnership, whilst Scully must also face some difficult decisions in her new role at a hospital. When a further woman goes missing in similar circumstances, and with the priest claiming to have further visions, Mulder and Scully, with the help of FBI agents Dakota Whitney (Amanda Peet) and Moseley Drummy (Exzibit), face a race against time to find the missing women, as their chances of being found alive grow slimmer by the day.
It seems like a long time ago now that The X-Files graced our screen, and the old Fox Mulder that used to be great in the series, simply doesn't apper in this film. David Duchovny looks very weathered and tired in this film (partly down to his beard, but also probably partly down to his real-life addiction). Gillian Anderson, however, is the same old Scully that I remember, very straight faced and scientific. Billy Connolly plays the psychic priest, with a sinful past, and does it well, although it is somewhat strange seeing him on a blockbuster film, as opposed to being on stage. Amanda Peet does well as one of the FBI agents, but I just find it hard to take Xzibit seriously as an actor, not just because of his name, but also because of the way he is on his show 'Pimp My Ride'. For different reasons, I just thought that the majority of the cast didn't perform in this movie.
Apart from the odd reference, there was no supernatural, or unexplained events throughout the whole film, which has always been the whole point of The X-Files. But as I have already mentioned, despite this, I did enjoy the film for it's action and suspense, which there is plenty of. However, the movie does suffer badly due to the ending, which I feel is extremely weak, and just seemed to be wrapped up in no time just to finish the film. There are a few new revelations about Mulder and Scully themselves, and about their past, to the the X-Filers entertained, and Walter Skinner even has a bit-part in the film.
Overall I feel that this film may be enjoyed more by non-X-Files fans, as opposed to fans, simply because they are likely to have less expectation of the film. The film is good, but has many weaknesses, and I am still struggling to understand why an X-Files movie would be made in this way .. maybe the truth is out there!
Advantages: The return of TV's loved heroes Disadvantages: A slightly lackluster return
...I was never a big X-Files fan this has been one of my eagerly awaited movies of the year. For those that for years revelled in the will they won't they hype regarding the romantic entanglements of agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovney) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) the answer to this is answered within a short time amount of time from the movie beginning; even though Mulder is on the run from the FBI; X-Files: I Want To Believe finds Mulder and ... ...rather brief appearance of the X-Files logo and the haunting whistle of the familiar X-files tune the story thrusts into the heart of the action. While the FBI aid a convicted paedophile Father Joe (Billy Connelly) in a search of a desolate snow and ice filled location the story cuts to a woman fighting for her life against two unknown assailants in the dark. The two incidents are connected the woman attacked being an FBI agent. The fact that Father ...

Advantages: The return of Mulder and Scully Disadvantages: Script and direction could have been better
When an FBI agent vanishes from her home the only connection the FBI have to finding her is a convicted paedophile priest. Doubting his ability they call upon one man with a history in this type of case, Fox Mulder (David Duchovny). He's been in hiding for the last 8 years avoiding false charges brought by his old FBI bosses to discredit his work. They ask for his help and agree to drop all of the charges as Mulder and former work, now cohabiter ... ...FBI once again. I'd always been a big fan of the X Files throughout the 90's until it came to an end in 2002. I'd even enjoyed the first movie and so when this return to the big screen was announced last year have to admit to have been looking forward t it. It's taken me until now to see it and given the reviews I've read over the last year for it I wasn't sure if I should even bother. I was quite surprised though and while it's not a complete return ...

My wife and I watched it tonight, and we both agreed that, as X-Files fans, we really weren't impressed. Advantages: Mitch Pileggi is back! Disadvantages: WAY too complicated
This is a truly awful movie. It starts out with an unknown woman being chased by 2 unknown male assailants for an unknown reason. Are you starting to see a pattern of unknown stuff? Anyway the FBI contact Scully who is working as a Doctor at a Catholic Hospital to help them find a missing FBI agent but they want her to help them find Mulder

It turns out ... ...think that's clearly explained) so the movie has already jumped the shark as the whole point of their relationship in the series was always a "will they, won't they" & left open to debate. THE PLOT:
After a ten year break, Mulder and Skully are back to investigate the abduction of FBI agents and a self castrated paedophile who can magically see visions, including where the agents are.
MY OPINION:
I grew up with the XFiles, and must have watched nearly every episode. A year or so ago, I rewatched a few, and realised they weren't as good as I thought. However, I was still delighted to see Mulder and Skully back in the mix, and intrigued to see what they now looked like more than anything!
The movie is, sadly, not very good. There's nothing original or interesting in the storyline, and the acting is one dimensional like back in the old days - Mulder is the montone man who shows no emotion, and Skully is pretty much the same. There's a love story between the two which is what we'd always wanted, but it seems forced ...
For the devoted viewers of THE X-FILES, there can be few things more exciting than hearing the familiar notes of Mark Snow's theme song at the beginning of THE X-FILES - I WANT TO BELIEVE. This cinematic follow-up to the series picks up years after it ended, but the characters are still the same ones that audiences loved. Fans that followed the show religiously won't be surprised to learn that Mulder (David Duchovny) is currently living in hiding, still researching the paranormal while he grows a shaggy beard. Meanwhile, Scully (Gillian Anderson) is working as a doctor at a Catholic hospital. When an F.B.I. agent goes missing, the bureau calls on the pair to return to their old work. The paranormal element of their case is found in Father Joe (Billy Connolly), a former priest who is having psychic visions and leading the team from the F.B.I. to evidence to help them solve their case. Mulder and Scully return to their roles of believer and sceptic as they join in the search.

Just as in the show, I WANT TO BELIEVE is a genre-bender that combines science fiction, horror, and thriller. In fact, the film seems like a two-part episode of the show--and that's meant as a compliment. Though made six years after the series' finale (and 10 since the first cinematic incarnation), the show's central elements are intact, especially the interaction between Mulder and Scully. For those who weren't fans of the show, I WANT TO BELIEVE offers chills similar to THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and THE BONE COLLECTOR--but minus the gore. The show was always more about the unseen horrors, and the film works well as it follows its predecessor's lead.
