films. Updated to the Cevennes countryside circa 1930's, this romantic tragedy is played out by the characters as though all is preordained. The three thematic dream sequences in the beginning, middle and end, allow the film to have a sense of freedom and escape beyond the boundaries of the narrative. Rivette is obsessed by the use of function and mystery in this film, creating something both sublime and devastating. This is the most original and breathtaking version of Wuthering Heights ever made. A truly spellbinding film by one of the French New Wave's master craftsmen.

Advantages: Classic Story, Strong characters. Classics often cheap. Disadvantages: Difficult language. Some complications
WutheringHeights is a book about people. It’s a soap opera in the lives of two households in early 19th century northern England and is one of those books that you just have to read.
It’s often mistaken for a love story telling the story of the famous romance between Catherine and Heathcliff. That was one of the mistakes I made. Although there is a relationship explored between these two characters, it’s by no means the main aspect of the story. Emily Brontė explores a range of issues in this book which were obvious key aspects of life at this time. Ideas such as inheritance rights, relationships, marriages and death are all dealt with and a range of options given to the reader. This although may make the story itself perhaps seem slightly weak as it appears to deal with too much almost, it’s an outstanding ...
Advantages: lots of action, and cleverly written,an amazing peice of english Disadvantages: long words, starts off slow, its helpfull if you can read between the lines
WutheringHeights a deliberately shocking, gothic genre novel which was published in 1847 by Emily Bronte hasnt always been one the greatest love stories written although you would think so after reading it.The exciting and shocking action was to much for the Victorian public to take in!
Bronte cleverly reflects the characters through the two contrasting worlds of WutheringHeights and Thrushcross Grange allthroughout the book for all you english fanatics ,but also for those who just want sheer entertainment the story starts off slow in an isolated location where you would imagine that nothing interesting could ever happen, however you will be impressed when the two houses clash like yellow and purple ,leading to a love that destroys everyone it touches.Personnally i enjoyed all aspects of the book ,being a person who seeks ...
Advantages: Pure pleasure, a wonderful classic film - who needs colour!!! Disadvantages: Dated for some and you'll need he tissues
"On the barren Yorkshire moors in England, a hundred years ago, stood a house as bleak and desolate as the wastes around it. Only a stranger lost in a storm would have dared to knock at the door of WutheringHeights."
WUTHERINGHEIGHTS
FILM 1939 ...DVD 2004
Anyone who has been reading my recent reviews may have noticed that I have been indulging in a lot of nostalgia by watching DVD's of all my old favourite classics. My latest purchase from Amazon for the grand price of £3.24 was the 1939 'WutheringHeights' adapted from Emily Bronte's classic novel.
This was the first film dramatization of Emily Bronte's 1847 masterpiece, with a screenplay written by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur (concentrating on the first two-thirds or 17 chapters of the 34 chapter book).
