For those of you who don't know what this story is about you may want to know, and don't worry, knowing the outline won't spoil it for you as it's probably the most famous occurrence in wrestling history and it's the circumstances leading up to the event and how it was worked that make it fascinating.
The story in brief...
- Bret Hart works for the WWF (World Wrestling Federation), now WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment)
- The boss, Vince McMahon, says he can't afford to keep him and that he should take offers from their direct competitor, WCW (World Championship Wrestling)
- Bret holds the WWF World Title and Vince wants him to lose it to Shawn Michaels before he leaves - Bret hates Shawn, oh dear!
- Vince wants Bret to lose the title in his home country, Canada, Bret says no.
- They sort out another way to do things, and everything seems ok
- On the night 'Vince Screws Bret', or does he?
That's a very short version of events but what this amazing DVD contains is footage of Bret Hart from about a year before what is now know as 'The Montreal Incident'. There's backstage footage, in-ring footage, footage of Bret at home - it's basically Bret's video diary leading up to the event where it all happened - Survivor Series 1997.
It's fascinating to see how things work behind the scenes in the world of pro wrestling. You see how the wrestlers act off screen, you see how they act with fans and families and you get to see how the big boss, Vince McMahon, acts with his employees.
This is Bret's struggle to do what he thinks is the right and reasonable thing for him and how the other people involved react to that and what they do to help their own causes, no matter what it does to Bret.
This is probably the greatest story in pro wrestling history and this is a true one! It's had fans divided into two camps for many years now - pro Bret or Pro Vince - who did the right thing and who is the villain?
This is a must for any wrestling fan and one for anyone who likes to study people. A roller coaster of emotions with a cast of interesting characters and one very big question....
Bret Screwed Bret
or
Vince Screwed Bret?
Watch the DVD and decide!
Past the main content of the DVD it would have been nice to have some interviews with people on their opinions - WWE employees probably wouldn't have been allowed to comment but there are plenty in the industry that could have. It's an awesome DVD but it could have gone further.
