That’s not what I call fun

My daughter loves singing and dancing so I saw this DVD for a good price and thought why not? On putting the DVD into the machine, though, my opinion was no longer why now but more why on earth.

TOO MUCH WOW

The write up on the back of the DVD promoted a fun and ‘brilliant’ DVD from the award winning producers of Fun Song Factory. Well I haven’t seen Fun Song Factory and if it is as good as this DVD then I don’t plan to.

It states that there is a combination of lively dancing, singing and special effect animations though Im still looking. As I put on the DVD I am struck with how basic it looks compared to DVD’s of today. It looks very low budget with a group of children who don’t seem to know what they are doing half of the time, and I feel bad saying that as they are children. Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t the worst thing I have seen, though it just does not seem to live up to expectation or the write up on the back of the DVD case.

Whilst this DVD does have many of the traditional and great nursery rhymes such as Polly put the kettle on, Baa Baa black sheep, Postman Pat, Twinkle Twinkle and many more, the way that they are put across are slow and not really full of any action or excitement. Each song is sung by the cast of children and few adults with some of children’s supposed favourites such as SuperTed and Bump dancing with them. I have never heard of half the character people and those I have heard of are more from my time as a child and not now. I don’t think my daughter recognized many of them at all which is a shame. Not only are they mainly unrecognizable characters, they are poor dancers and the costumes just seemed to sag off of them. You want character people to bring the energy and excitement as many do in other DVD’s or in holiday camps in England (which my daughter thoroughly enjoyed), though these character people just seemed to want to be anywhere else but there dancing with the children.

The children bless them did try to put their all in for the songs, and they were only preschool children supposedly – personally many of them seemed a lot older – but the rest of the DVD just let them down.

The DVD also says that children will be in fits of laughter when watching this and joining in, though my daughter soon got bored of it and that says something as she loves dancing and singing. It is a shame really as there is a lack of purely nursery rhyme DVD’s out there and I really had high hopes for this one.

I have noticed that there are a number of reviews elsewhere on this and a lot of them are positive so I guess it is a matter of opinion. It is very low in price, I was able to get it for £2.50 online at Amazon so it certainly isn’t breaking the bank to try it and you never know – your children might like it. Unfortunately my daughter just didn’t pay any attention to it.

I have noticed that it is endorsed by the Pre-School Learning Alliance which is a leading charity for children under the age of five, so this is one good thing about this and I can let them off for the low budget filming as a charity benefiting from this is a very good thing so in one way I am glad that I brought the DVD though unfortunately it just isn’t great enough to make enough money for the children.

EXTRA’s

There are no extras at all on this DVD, just approximately 45 minutes of song and dance.

EDUCATIONAL

If your child does end up liking this DVD then they may learn the songs and dances from it, though that’s as far as the educational aspect goes for this DVD.

FINAL WORD

This review is much shorter than my others as unfortunately the DVD just doesn’t have enough to write about. Some children may love it though unfortunately my daughter didn’t and I wasn’t that impressed by it either. Character people were poor and costumes just as bad, there doesn’t seem to be any modern thought in the production of it and it is all very low budget (but then it is for a charity).

I would recommend it only for the reason of making a small bit of money for the charity though that’s only if you get it new. It was made in 2003 so there is a chance the money will still go to the charity.
