Advantages: Many Key Witnesses Available for commentary Disadvantages: Very few stock images in colour.
The World at War Series is refreshingly unique, with the strong powerful voice of Laurence Olivier as Narrator, it offers an insight into both sides of the war, and best of all, alot of the key witnesses or participants of major events were still alive at the time of this documentary so a phenominal amount of commentary was available making this one of the most coverted History sets ever.
It even goes onto describe the end of the Warin Germany, known as Nemesis in the series, it shows not only the human suffering that allied nations faced, but also the civilian and military suffering on the side of the axis.
It covers everything, such as the Holocaust, the Blitz, The U boats, the Burma Campaign, the American Advance in the Pacific, and so forth. ...
Advantages: Excellent series that you watch and watch again. Disadvantages: Can be very upsetting and at times graphical suffering is shown.
I remember first watching this series in the 1970's as a child and I have watched it many times since.
The storyline is compelling as it takes you through the Second WorldWar, the reasons for the conflict, political manouvering and dogma by both sides, the in fighting between the allies on both sides and most of all the suffering of so many souls.
War is a very terrible thing, a tragic waste of humanity and as this tale is woven what comes through is the scarring of a generation of people around the world that is still felt today.
In todays world, where war is almost equated with a video game replete with high definition pictures of guided missiles hitting targets, this series should be shown to show the real price of going to war - peace. ...
Advantages: Interesting to see colour footage Disadvantages: None, really
