"Hi, my name is Jonny" Audience encouragement, "Hi, Jonny" "And I've got a watching addiction with Withnail and I" *phew* Glad I got that off my chest
But the funny thing is though; I'm not the only person who has done countless of quotes from this film, especially, and isn't this an irony, when I've been drinking.
The setting is London in the late sixties and follows the story of two unemployed actors, Withnail (Richard E. Grant) and I (Paul McGann). They escape to a cottage for the weekend after being offered the keys by Uncle Monty (Richard Griffiths), thus, they escape the squat of their flat and drug dealer Danny (Ralph Brown) and make for the countryside, until they realise they went on holiday by mistake. Cue drowning your sorrows in booze, pills, lighter fluid and a Camberwell carrot.
The very fact that this film alone is an influence to a drinking game, popular with students and winos, is proof that this film has cemented itself in cult status. And I can promise you now, even thirty years on, this film will still be as fresh as it is now on its 20th anniversary edition.
Now, let's go onto the DVD itself, because there is a few interesting little things I would like to point out.
First off, this DVD should come in a metallic DVD case, not that plastic crap that I've seen in the stores. It should be a three disc set, the first disc containing the main feature and two commentary tracks by director (Bruce Robinson) and also by actors Paul McGann and Ralph Brown. Both commentaries are really well done, they let you know their own personal feelings and on set facts about the film, all good for the keen fan.
The second disc contains all the features, 1999 documentary, director's interview, feature about two fans who go out to the original set location and make a documentary about it, the drinking game explained in full, a swear-a-thon, behind the scene picture stills and the original trailer.
Now, the stuff you don't find on the back of the case.
Third disc contains the film score, remember, this is the film score, so don't expect Jimi Hendrix or King Curtis to blast away, 8 tracks in total make up the score, enjoyable listening.
Also included are two badges with 'Withnail' on one and 'I' on the other.
And finally the leaflet with, 'Twenty things you might not know about Withnail and I'.
And that's the whole contents of the 20th Anniversary Edition; I got mine for seven pounds, brand new, not joking. So if you ask, 'Is it worth the money I pay', the answer 'Damn right, it is'.
And that's it, I could go on about the film, list my favourite quotes, my favourite scenes, but, what's the point. What could I possibly say that hasn't been said by countless other people, whether it be by review or simply people who you over hear in the street. Quite simply, it is a film that describes the 60s so accurately well; it's full of tragic and comic elements, not to mention an endless list of quotable lines, it is one of Britain's biggest cult films. Ladies and gentlemen, raise your glasses to 'Withnail and I', chin chin!
