This show is like Touching Evil on some levels. The basic premise of the show surrounds serial killers who seem to target their victims in a sense which is unfathomable to the conventional detectives. Therefore they enlist the help of Tony (Robson Green) to help them understand the psychology of the killer, understand why he is perpetrating these acts, who his targets are and how to catch the killer before he can strike again.
The character that Robson Greene plays is excellent. On some levels he is extremely instinctive, insightful, observant and with a vast knowledge of the human mind and in particular how these serial killers tick. However in having these qualities he also has some real weaknesses as he struggles to form genuine human bonds due to him lacking chemistry with most people.
They do not understand him and likewise, he doesn't really understand them. This is what makes him so good in this role because he is something of an enigma. He is even something of an enigma to himself which makes him fascinating.
The stories are well told with a strong plot line which are guaranteed to strike you with a twist in the tale. The stories are also very dark as you would expect from a programme of this nature not simply in the issues they deal with but in the content. There are some quite gory moments but this adds to the show. The show constructs a staged path in which the story becomes more suspenseful and more intense as more of the plot unravels until it reaches a crescendo of action.
The other actors and actresses in the show do an excellent job in particular the serial killers and the lead detective who displays a great on screen chemistry with Tony, but it is Robson Greene that makes this show must see television programme.
Definitely one of the best of it's ilk and highlights the huge gulf between the good dramas and the mediocre ones. The only thing to caution about is although it's understandable given the nature of the programme, those who are little squeamish might be advised to give this one a miss as there are some unpleasant moments to put it mildly.
That aside though, this is a superb series and given how cheaply I have seen these 2 sets can now be bought, this makes this all the more appealing.
