I've watched this film so many times and I still love to watch it. From an early age I considered this to be one of my favourite films and having gone out and bought the DVD I still love it. It's a spectacular film, with magnificent special effects and a classic good versus evil story line.
The main character, Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davies- plays many other famous and often not acknowledged parts such as Wicket in "Star wars" and marvin the paranoid android in "hitch hikers guide to the galaxy") (the best PC word I know) a dwarf, lives in a village with similar people. He's married happily with two kids, life is simple but good. Then he finds a baby floating down the river and things change. He is given the task of taking the baby to a tall people's or "Daikini" village. What he doesn't know is that this baby is special and is destined to overthrow an evil ruling sorceress. Because the forces of good don't want this baby to fall into evil hands Willow is given help from fairies, brownies and in particular a cocky swordsman called Madmartigan (played by Val Kilmer). Cue a spectacular battle between the forces of good and the forces of evil as they vie for possession of the baby.
This film is made by George Lucas and Ron Howard, so you know its in good hands and it will be full of great special effects. With creatures such a trolls ("I hate trolls!"), two headed dragon beasts, brownies, fairies and characters that are great sorcerers and fantastical swordsmen this film is well and truly in the "lord of the rings" type fantasy realm. The brownies add a dose of humour and even Val Kilmer has some funny moments. It's all massive fun. Also an interesting fact is that Val Kilmers love interest played by Joanne Walley went on to be his wife after this.
Although aimed mainly at children its fun for all ages. I love it, the action is superb, the swordplay awesome, special effects are great (the scene where they are turned into pigs is really scary). If you like fantasy films or have children this is just the film for you. I really can't fault it, it's just a really good wholesome film.
Special features on the DVD include: Feature commentary by Warwick Davies 2 Featurettes "willow:making of an adventure" and "morf to morphing:the dawn of digital filmmaking" trailer 2 teasers 8 tv spots still gallery intereactive menus scene access
As you can see this DVD has a wealth of extras and all of them are a great addition to the DVD. The two featurettes are entertaining and interesting and Warwick Davies commentary is one of the best I've heard.
