Burroughs' straightest novel?

Advantages: Makes Burroughs' other work clearer
Disadvantages: Not a terribly interesting story

"Queer" is the second of Burroughs autobiographical novels (the first was "Junky" - the titles alone tell you all you need to know about Burroughs' life at the time. The book was written in the fifties but not published till 1985, which is unfortunate since not much else Burroughs wrote makes sense without it. "Queer" is effectively a dead-end love story beteen William Lee (i.e., Burroughs himself) and Eugene Allerton. Sadly Lee never explains what it is he sees in the other, whilst Allerton never has a convincing reason for acquiescing, since Lee seems to bore him profoundly. Burroughs isn't for everyone, and "Queer" probably isn't for every Burroughs fan. Rather than displaying the literary pyrotechnics for which he became infamous, this novel is conventionally written, and probably isn't particularly eye-opening for anyone who ...

Review of Queer - William S. Burroughs

On the end of every fork...

Advantages: Unique, colourful, bitingly satirical
Disadvantages: Graphic, obscene, disturbing, explicit

like to comment on the author as I feel that knowing something about him will help potential readers to judge whether this book is for them. William Burroughs was an American author living through almost all of the 20th century and is known for being a member of the so-called "Beat" generation of the 1950s, a group of radical authors which also included such literary greats as Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. Much of Burroughs work is semi-autobiographical and is based on his own experiences traveling through such places as war-time Vienna, Tangier, Mexico and New York. His life was characterized by his addiction to a number of drugs, most notably heroin and morphine, and his experimentation with various others, and thus a great deal of his work details his experiences as an addict and was written whilst under the influence of narcotics ...

Review of Naked Lunch - William S. Burroughs

Poker Academy - dvd that teaches you nothing!

Advantages: briefly shows you how to play poker
Disadvantages: waste of money, only lasts 30mins-45mins!!!

Since 2004, I have been into poker in a big way, I play both on and offline. I found that by reading books and watching dvds, i could better my game both phsically and mentally... Thats when I seen poker academy and it sounded really good, so £19.99, I thought why not... Actors Frank Butcher from Eastenders, Pin up Jacki Degg and few others star playing a game of poker... I thought by the sound of it that it would've been an educational video, telling you how to bluff etc. They play a few games of cards, and they get picked up on what they are doing wrong and how they can improve. I didnt expect much of the DVD, but paying £20 I did expect a bit more, and its fair to say that I dont have high expectations, and was extremly dissapointed. It was a very boring start to the DVD, but I thought no I'll give it time ...
