Whistle Down The Wind, The Film was made in 1961 and originally adapted from the book that was written by Mary Hayley Bell.
The front of this video cover sums up the whole film itself and you can tell what sort of film it is going to be. It is like a Sepia brown in colour and has a picture of Kathy, Charles and Nan on it and then there are small pictures of the other characters.
The Main Characters ... ...Bostock age 12/13 - Hayley Mills
Nan Bostock age 9 - Diane Holgate
Charles Bostock age 6 - Alan Barnes
The ages are approximate as you never hear of what age they are except for Charles who has a 6th Birthday Party.
The Adults
---------------
Aunty Bostock
Dad - Bernard Lee
Eddie - Farmhand
Jesus alias Arthur Alan Blakey - Alan Bates
This is my all time favourite film and I have watched it over 100 times and the first time I ever saw it was when I was around 8 years old as people would laugh and call me Kathy after the character that Hayley Mills played as I was such a religious little girl even though no one else in my family was.

The Main Characters are as follows:- The Children ------------------ Kathy Bostock age 12/13 - Hayley Mills Nan Bostock age 9 - Diane Holgate Charles Bostock age 6 - Alan Barnes The ages are approximate as you never hear of what age they are except for Charles who has a 6th Birthday Party.
The Adults --------------- Aunty Bostock Dad - Bernard Lee Eddie - Farmhand Jesus alias Arthur Alan Blakey - Alan Bates
The story line is that the children's mother passed away and their dads sister, who is referred to as Aunty all the way through comes to look after them. They live on a remote farm up in Burnley in Yorkshire.
Eddie is a farmhand who helps out and the cat has 3 kittens and he wraps them up in a sack and goes to dump them in the quarry river. The children rescue the kittens and on the way home bump into the Salvation Army and Charles offers the kittens to them. The Children sneak past their father and put the kittens in the barn and as they take Dusty the cats mother to see them. They name the kittens and put them in a box and they talk about Jesus. Kathy remarks well he is dead. At this point Nan says "Kathy that is awful". That night Kathy pops outside to the toilet and runs to the barn to see how the kittens are. She stumbles upon a male and he awakes and looks at her and says "Jesus Christ", then passes out.
The whole family is quite religious and they pop off to Sunday School and they ask questions to their Sunday School Teacher. "What would happen if he came back in person? Would he be persecuted?" The teacher replies there are still some bad people in the world and we would praise him and that all the good people would win.
From this point on they decide that it is going to be a children versus adults secret. Kathy first tells her sister Nan and Charles finds out and is sworn to secrecy, however on the way back from Sunday School there are about 15 Children wanting to see Jesus. They hand presents over to Jesus. Nan gives him a copy of Shirley, a girls magazine and another girl offers him his book, the bible. Kathy gives him a picture of him in the olden days and states that this is him. At this point Jesus realise just who they think he is and his attitude changes towards the children.
They keep the secret and smuggle food out to him and one day Jesus asks her to go and get a parcel for him. In the meanwhile a police car has been to the father warning of the escaped murderous criminal. Dad asks the children have they spoken to anyone and they deny everything.
Then one day it is Charles 6th Birthday and they are handing out Birthday Cake, Nan takes two pieces and Aunty asks who is the second piece for and she forgets and tells her it is for Jesus. Dad asks more questions and Aunty runs like the clappers to inform the police that the escaped convict is there in the barn. Meanwhile the message gets around to all the kids in Burnley and they flock over the hills and from every angle to go and help him.
Right that is all I am going to tell you about the film. If you want to know the ending, you will have to buy it.
Favourite sayings in this film.
Nan about the Sunday School Teacher "She talks out the back of her neck she does."
Charles to the girls for keeping the secret "You little cow" then gets slapped by Aunty.
Sadly Alan Bates has just recently passed away and from what I have been told Alan Barnes who played young Charles also passed away at an early age.
The soundtrack is unique and just sounds as though some one is whistling through their teeth. throught the song they play We Three Kings.
This is a great film and the only word used is cow, 3 times in the film and Kathy is slapped across the face by a bully.
The emotions are great in the film and the kids do a great performance. Now I am not a soppy person but this film always has me in tears at the end as I would love to change the ending. It is a great family film and shows how naive children used to be. Do you remember dufflecoats and gaberdines and the boys with those little billy bunter hats.
I would recommend this film to anyone and everyone should have a copy of this.
It makes such a refreshing change not to see blood and guts on a film and people been shot and knocked over and the like. It is a simple film with a good story line.
This video was bought at a local video shop and cost me around £7. Well worth the money.
Advantages: Family Entertainment Disadvantages: There is none
Hello people who enjoy good viewing. I watched this at Stoke Regency Theatre and it was fantastic. It was the first time in the theatre and what a film. It started off with a family who's mother was absent, you have father, sister and brother. It is a production which is full of love with a twist of anger. Don't get me wrong no killing or blood which is a bonus just love that is lost. It is full of emotion and at times grabs your heart which makes ... ...live I think you can feel more emotion to the family and more on the egde of your seat. I went with my family which consisted of my dad,46, my mum,37, and my sister ,17, and nobody in my family had a bad word to say. Please give a view. ...
