Could Happen?from start to finish without a pause button: it's more lame than a three-legged dog. The plot is straightforward enough: two men, each as crooked as the other, come into conflict when petty thief Kevin Caffrey (Martin Lawrence) breaks into the apparently unoccupied beach house of wealthy and unscrupulous businessman Max Fairbanks (Danny DeVito). The house turns out not to be empty: Fairbanks calls the cops, claims that Caffrey has stolen his ring and coolly claims it back in front of his uniformed audience. It's a ring that Caffrey values because it has just been given to him by his new girlfriend Amber (Carmen Ejogo). He's so desperate to get it back that he hounds Fairbanks through the rest of the film, breaking into various Fairbanks properties as he goes.Words like "zany" and "madcap" could be used in the interests of charity, but actually the film falls flat on its face. Lawrence is certainly no Eddie Murphy and the plot would need an injection of major talent to give it a chance. DeVito yet again relies on his stature to provide the laughs. John Leguizamo plays Caffrey's sidekick as best he can but the fake sheikhs-in-tea-towels scene induces more groans than laughs. This is one for diehard fans of the lead actors only.On the DVD:What's the Worst That Could Happen?comes to DVD with a choice of two spoken languages (English or French) and many subtitle options. There's also a generous selection of outtakes, an alternative ending, a music video ("Music" by Erick Sermon) and the original theatrical trailer. It's just a shame that the film itself isn't better. --Harriet Smith

On one of my usual visits to EBay looking for bargain DVD’s I came across this one and thought it was bound to be good as it stars Diddy Danny DeVito. I have to say that the back cover of the DVD case says that this film is ’Crazy, Laugh out loud, genuinely hysterical’ but I did not find this.
The plot of the film is about Kevin, played by Martin Lawrence, who is a thief and makes his money from stealing from rich people but when he meets a girl he falls for her and when she gives him her father ring to wear he is totally smitten with her. We are also introduced to Max Fairbanks, played by Danny DeVito, who is a very rich business man. He is facing bankruptcy and struggling to keep his money and business.
Kevin and Max meet when Kevin is stealing from his mansion house which Max is not allowed to be in and Kevin interrupts Max with Miss September! Max calls the police and they arrest Kevin but as he is being taken out of the house Max says that the ring Kevin is wearing belongs to him and so takes in off him. Kevin is devastated that he has lots the ring which his new girlfriend has given to him and takes it upon himself to go and try to get it back. All does not go well for Kevin as he struggles to get the ring back and Max also finds Kevin is a lot tougher and sneakier than he thought. Will Kevin get his ring back and just how much will Max loose?
I was expecting a lot from this film as all previous films which I have seen DeVito in have really had me laughing and at times laugh out loud. Unfortunately this film did not live up to my expectations. There are some funny parts in the film which made me chuckle but not laugh out loud or hysterical like the back of the DVD case told me.
I thought Martin Lawrence and Danny DeVito did play their characters very well and they were believable. They were also supported by great actors which all worked well together and had a good chemistry. The story line was quite good and shows how men can sometimes act like children and bare a grudge over something stupid. I like the way there were a few twists in the story and it was not all simple. I did find that before the last half hour of the film I had worked out the ending so I was a little let down when I was right as I like it when the ending does surprise me in films.
There are some stupid characters in this film, Max’s secretary and the Police officer which is as camp as anything were just pointless to me and I feel that they were only in the film as the writers were looking to get the comedy side from them. The film would have been slightly better if they had not have lowered the standard with these characters as it did put me slightly off.
With a bit more thought from the writers they really could have made this film much better, a few more plot twists and additional characters which were featured more would have helped to make the story stronger and perhaps funnier. I did find that when I was chuckling it was not at the main characters but at the supporting ones which should not have been the case.
The DVD which I have does have some bonus featured which include:-
Alternate ending 10 Deleted Scenes Outtakes Music Video Original Theatrical Trailer Audio Commentary with Danny DeVito, William Fichtner, Bernie Mac, Carmen Ejogo, Nora Dunn, Sascha Knopf, Sioban Fallon, GQ and Glenne Heady
I did not take the trouble to watch these features as I was not overly impressed with the film.
The DVD has a running time of 1 hour and 34 minutes which I feel was plenty long enough for one man chasing and trying to outwit another man for a gold ring. The film does have a 15 certificate which I think may be slightly too high, there is some bad language in the film but nothing which children could not hear on the television nearly anytime of the day.
The film was released by Metro Goldwyn Mayer in 2001. I paid just under £2 for this DVD and I am so glad I did not pay more.
I do not recommend this film unless you watch it with no expectations of great humour.
